In many cases, a pet with “behavioural problems” may actually be displaying normal behaviour that just isn’t considered socially acceptable. It can also often signal underlying pain, injury or another physical condition.
Dr Simone Maher, Chief Veterinary Officer at PetSure says: “Two common conditions that cause pain in pets are arthritis and dental disease. Undiagnosed or unmanaged, either of these health concerns may cause your dog (or cat) to uncharacteristically display sudden aggression, simply due to the pain associated with the condition.”
Dr Maher says another problem might be that the pet is anxious, bored or frustrated and may not be getting enough physical or mental stimulation in the form of exercise, play, bonding time, puzzle solving or environmental enrichment.
“If your dog or cat suddenly changes their behaviour, it’s always best to first see your vet to rule out any underlying physical causes,” she adds.
For dogs, a sniffari is all about encouraging them to use their noses. This could simply take the form of a walk where they are allowed to wander and sniff, which gives your dog some choice about where they go and who else has recently walked by!
Snuffle mats and formal nose work training, also provide great outlets for mental stimulation. For more strategies to promote your pet’s emotional wellbeing, check out the tips and tricks here.

Pet Insurance
Although pet insurance isn’t for every cat or dog owner, when preparing for pet parenthood it’s important to factor in all potential pet health care costs. Like humans, some cats and dogs may require regular treatments for ill health, including prescription medication and some breeds are genetically pre-disposed to developing certain health conditions.
At other times accidents just happen. Although some pet insurance products cover veterinary behaviour medicine, they typically don’t cover treatment by a pet psychologist, trainer or behaviourist.
