Invopets - Cricket Dog Treats

Invopets Founders Dan and Steph decided that there wasn’t an easy way to get our dogs on board with sustainable efforts however after researching the nutritional and environmental benefits of using crickets in pet food, it really looked like a no-brainer!

After 12 months of product development, Invopets launched their first product: Cricket Dog Treats.

Why choose crickets for your dog treats?

✔️ Nutrition

Crickets have more than double the amount of protein per gram than beef and chicken while boasting higher quality amino acid profiles as well.

They provide more fibre than broccoli, more Omega 3s than Salmon and they even have more iron than spinach.

So many benefits that are not normally associated with a protein source.

✔️ Environment

Crickets require less land, water and feed to produce the same amount of protein than cows and chickens.

For example, to produce 1kg of protein cows need to be fed 10kg worth of food, while crickets only need 1.7kg. Chickens need 2,300 litres of water per kg of protein whereas crickets only need 1 litre for that same of amount of protein. The efficiency and sustainability of crickets is simply out of this world.

✔️ Humane

Current livestock production methods involve intensive measures to quickly produce enough product to meet current demand and expectations. Chickens and pigs are crammed into small overcrowded pens as it’s the only way to farm them efficiently at scale to meet the high demand, most of these animals won’t live past 20% of their life expectancy.

Crickets are farmed in temperature-controlled rooms clustering together and growing up until they are harvested. When this time comes the crickets have usually lived to 80% of their life expectancy, dry ice is introduced and due to them being cold blooded, they fall into a state of hibernation. They are then ground down into a flour and used in our baking process.

Will my dog like Cricket Dog Treats?

“Dogs are known to selectively choose foods that are high in protein and can tell when even a single amino acid is lacking from a meal”.

At product development we set out to see if that theory was true. We gave dogs two options to choose from: one was a standard meat-based treat and the other was our cricket treat.

The result, the cricket treats got munched first every single time, so it’s true!

✔️ Hypoallergenic

Dogs that have trouble eating beef, lamb or chicken can enjoy cricket treats without the nasty side effects as crickets are hypoallergenic.

✔️ High-quality crickets

All crickets used in Invopets Cricket Dog Treats are locally sourced from an organic insect farmer.

PETstock National Pet Adoption Day 2020 - February 15

Think different, adopt different this National Pet Adoption Day

Olympian, television personality and animal rescue advocate Giaan Rooney is heading up a national campaign encouraging Australians to adopt not shop for pets

On Saturday February 15PETstock stores across the country will play host to animal rescue organisations as part of its sixth annual National Pet Adoption Day, an initiative of PETstock’s charity PETstock Assist with support from event partner PetRescue

The past five Adoption Days have found homes for nearly 3,000 animals across Australia, and this year PETstock Assist is aiming to find forever homes for another 1,000 rescue pets.

Giaan, who grew up raising rescues, is urging Australians to adopt different in 2020; to adopt a new way of thinking when it comes to animal adoption and consider a pet they haven’t before

“It was love at first sight with my most recent rescue, Lester,” she says.

“Despite being one leg short, Lester was the perfect dog: obedient, easy to train, loving and grateful. He gave me so much and wanted so little in return. His passing last year still makes me tear up today.

“Our family will certainly be rescuing again when we’re ready for a new pet and I encourage all would-be owners looking for a pet to consider adoption.”

PETstock Assist Charity and Events Coordinator, Jess Guilfoyle, says ‘Adopt Different’ is a call to would-be owners to think differently about adopting a pet.

“We want people to be open to different types of animals and breeds, to make considered and sustainable choices, and to give rescue pets a chance at a better life,” she says.

“Contrary to popular
belief many animals are surrendered to rescue groups through no fault of their own. Like little Lester, who was surrendered after suffering a broken leg requiring medical attention and amputation.

“We’re encouraging all animal lovers to attend Adoption Day on February 15, to meet pets in need, educate themselves on adoption and reconsider any biases they may have towards rescue animals.

“All pets deserve a safe and loving forever home and through initiatives like this we hope to break the cycle of pet homelessness.”

PetRescue Co-Founder, Vickie Davy, has seen firsthand the incredible bonds that form when new owners open their mind and adopt different.

“A lot of people start their search for a new pet with a certain type, breed, or age in mind. However, your perfect match might not be the pet you think,” she says.

“If you have your hands full with kids, an older, more settled dog or cat may be a far better fit than a young, energetic puppy. Or, if it’s your child’s first pet, a smaller animal such as a guinea pig or reptile may be a better option and a great introduction to the responsibility of pet ownership.”

Rescue pets receive extensive training and behavioural assessments before being rehomed, allowing potential owners to make an informed decision on the right pet for their lifestyle.

When: Saturday 15th February 2020, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm (10:00 am – 3:00 pm in Western Australia)

Where: Participating PETstock stores across Australia

For more information on Adoption Day, visit www.petstock.com.au/assist/adopt-different or to begin the search for your new family member, visit petrescue.com.au

Scream Xtreme Tough Dog Toys – Review

We all know dog toys are not built to last forever but as a recent Christmas toy disappointment reminded us, we still want them to last more than just an hour...

Living with 3 Belgian Shepherds who are all tough chewers – even our 13-year old - we’ve had our fair share of disappointments over the years despite all the claims on the product labelling. Sadly spending a lot of dollars on a big name brand is no guarantee of success…

So when wholesaler Prestige Pet Products reached out to us this year suggesting we trial their brand new range of Scream Xtreme Dog Toys, especially designed to resist the assaults of extreme chewers, we were all ears!

The Scream Xtreme range of Dog Toys

You can choose from two different shapes: Xtreme Treat Dumbbells and Xtreme Treat Bones, all available in 3 sizes: Small, Medium/Large and X Large, to suit all dog breeds.

The Small size (only 9cm in height) would suit dogs like Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and smaller breeds. The Medium/Large size (13cm high) would suit your Staffies.
The Extra Large (20cm) is recommended for German Shepherds and larger dog breeds.

Both the Treat Dumbbells and Treat Bones dog toys come in a choice of four bright colours: Loud Pink, Loud Orange, Loud Blue, Loud Green (this last one looks more like a yellow in our opinion).

The first overwhelming (but not unpleasant) impression upon opening our box was a very strong scent of vanilla (there was no outer packaging for the products we received) which was a first for us. Chew toys we’ve purchased in the past have all been unscented or bacon- or chicken-flavoured, which is not ideal when they mostly lie around on your carpet and in main living areas.

We were pleased to learn that the Scream Xtreme range contains no nasties often associated with plastic toys: they’re all BPA free, lead free and phthalate free

The toys are made using TPR material - also known as thermoplastic rubber, a material that has the properties of both plastic and rubber. It offers excellent weather resistance as well as being resistant to tears and abrasions. Did you know that an average adult Belgian Malinois has a bite force of 195 psi - this means that when they bite, 195 pounds of pressure is applied to each square inch!

It feels strong but still has some give so it’s unlikely to crack open like a coconut as happened to some of our toys in the early years due to poor choices…

As these toys will undoubtedly collect a lot of pet hair and dust rolling around on our floors, it was great to see we could simply stick them in the dishwasher when they need a clean.
We love versatile dog toys that can be used both for indoor and outdoor play depending on weather conditions and our dogs’ moods.  All our toys are on a time share with each dog picking what he/she feels like from their toy box or the "lawn"!

The Scream Xtreme dog toys are suitable for dogs of all ages from teething puppies – this may save your furniture – to adults and even your senior dogs whose teeth may be a little more fragile.

The toys are hollow in the middle so you can use them as treat dispensers however the treats will fall out pretty quickly so this does not present much of a challenge.
Thankfully, they’re perfectly fine just used as chew toys.

As a bonus, we discovered that these Scream Xtreme dog toys also float so if your dog loves diving and retrieving his toys from the pool or at the beach, these are perfect for summer fun!

Aramis  - our female Malinois - is usually the dog using all toys the most, chewing on them like a pacifier in the evenings and this appears to soothe our 'savage beast' somewhat…

Another plus for this new range is its pricing, very competitive based on dog toys we have sampled in the past.

How long will these Scream Xtreme Dog Toys last with our pack? Well, that is the big question! We will certainly be updating our review at the first sign of wear and tear ...

If you need to diversify your dog toys at the start of this new year to beat the back-to-school blues, the Scream Xtreme Dog Toys are definitely worthwhile considering if you have an extreme chewer.

How Dumpling the Labrador Found Her Happily Ever After

The Petbarn Foundation and its work with the Labrador Rescue group are receiving a lot of attention for their efforts in finding social media rising star Dumpling the Dog a new home.

Back in 2019, Dumpling was abandoned at a pound on the Gold Coast after being mercilessly used as a backyard breeding dog for years. She was ten years old, blind and weighed in at almost 50kg...

Labrador Rescue took her in and she was looked after by her foster carer, Ashleigh Murphy from Petbarn Arundel. Ashleigh brought Dumpling to Greencross Vets Helensvale where local veterinarian, Dr Pieter Theron, discovered a lot of pressure behind both of Dumpling’s eyes, which was causing her a lot of pain.

Dr Pieter Theron explains "Dumpling suffered from bilateral glaucoma, a build up in pressure within the eye, which is painful and leads to a decline in vision; the onset of decline is dependent on the amount of pressure experienced in the eye/s.
Greencross Vets Helensvale Dr Pieter Theron explains the importance of weight management to Sasha (also Labrador Rescue)

The eyes have their own amazing filtration of fluid (nutrients), a specialised plumping system if you like and in her case the movement of fluid in and out of the eye was impaired resulting in an increase in pressure, which in turn damaged the delicate tissue responsible for vision whilst causing ongoing pain.

In Dumpling's case, it is rather difficult to know what the initial cause for her blocked plumping was but I have a theory of the potential causes: poor diet, obesity, a genetic element and a high probability of trauma or inflammation in the eyes likely all led to her eye disease: 'a perfect storm'.

Dumpling presented with pressure in her eyes at 4 to 6 times over the normal upper limit and as a result, she also had evidence of lens luxation. especially prominent in her right eye. Her right eye pressure was 1.5x more than the left eye and the delicate lens in the right eye had prolapsed or luxated (forced out of its natural position) which also added to her pain and discomfort not to mention the luxated lens now out of its natural position added to the blocked plumping and was likely why her right eye's pressure was greater then her left.

Both eyes had evidence of advanced (mature) cataracts - opacity over the lens and this may have been the initial problem which caused a cascade of problems within the eyes.

Her cataracts may have been caused by a genetic element but dogs can get this from a variety of conditions the most common being sugar diabetes (not in Dumpling's case).

I also think her obesity didn't help at all as the lens requires high quality nutrients and the eyes are known to be barometer of health

I would probable say that in Dumplings case her ocular issues were likely due to a perfect storm: a genetic element, a poor diet, a few bumps to the head (possible abuse) and inflammation and a lack of adequate access to veterinary care all created the optimal conditions for her eye disease.

Due to her advanced state of eye disease (poor vision and ongoing pain) medical management was not a suitable long term option and fortunately we had the opportunity to help.
Both Greencross Vets and Labrador Rescue decided that the best option was to remove both her eyes so Dumpling could have a pain-free second chance.

A bilateral enucleation (removal of both eyes) surgery was performed. Dumpling had a very tricky anaesthetic and was not very keen on breathing by herself but luckily our dedicated anaesthetic nurse was able to do that for her. *Fat dogs have a higher anaesthetic risk and often get 'lazy' in breathing under general anaesthetic.

Her recovery process required an elizabethan collar (cone of shame) to stop her from scratching at her sutures, a confined and safe space for recovery, pain medications and anti-inflammatories, regular post operative checks but most importantly a lot of love, patience and attention.

Dumpling has since recovered, losing a whopping 13 kg, and she was listed for adoption on Labrador Rescue’s Facebook page to find her fur-ever home: that post received over 100 comments within its first hour!

In fact, she’s become somewhat of a social media star on the Labrador Rescue Facebook page, helping with their fundraising efforts. And we're happy to report all this social
media attention has paid off for Dumpling.

After a whopping 63 applic
ations from potential families, Dumpling’s carer Ashleigh decided the Ingebrigtsen family were the lucky ones. Dumpling’s new dog mum Debbie and dog dad Craig Ingebrigtsen welcomed the adorable 10-year-old in with open arms and she's currently on her 2-week trial with her new family.

Her foster carer Ashley Murphy was delighted to share her latest news with us.

"Dumpling was a little stressed at the start but (Dr) Pete and I hung around for a couple of hours so she had familiar people around.

Once Dumpling was settled in, Pete and I left. It has been almost a week now at her new home and she’s been great.

She follows her new Labrador brother Bobby around like a shadow, and when they nap she always has to touch him.

Dumpling has already made herself at home, sleeping on the couch, hanging around the kitchen whilst her new parents cook, just in case they drop some scraps!

Her favourite part is when her new parents have their young grandkids come to visit as they leave lots of crumbs around for her to eat.
Dumpling is enjoying her new home and they treat her like the queen she is. Every morning, Dumpling, Bobby and her parents go for a coffee run as their new family routine. Dumpling loves her walks and all her treats." shares Ashley.

Dumpling's uplifting story shows that every dog is deserving of their happily ever after.

Ten Petbarn stores across the Gold Coast raised money towards Petbarn Foundation’s annual Tree of Hope fundraising appeal, with 25% of the proceeds donated to Labrador Rescue, covering all of Dumpling’s vet costs including eye surgery.
