More than just a name: ‘Pets as part of the family’ trend extends to names and healthcare
The most popular name for pets in Australia is “Luna” – for the seventh year in a row.
Data from this year’s Pet Health Monitor shows that Luna has been at the top of the list of pet names going back to 2017.
This year, Luna came out on top in NSW, ACT, VIC, QLD, WA and SA. But Tasmania is bucking the trend with the most popular pet name in the state this year being “Daisy”; and in the Northern Territory, “Milo” takes the lead.
Other favourites in the top 10 are: Frankie, Coco, Teddy, Charlie, Archie, Bella, Ruby, and there are plenty more Daisies and Milos Australia-wide too.
Luna has also gained popularity as a name for our human babies, more than doubling in popularity over the last few years [1].
“Pet names are a reflection of popular culture and wider trends.” says Jenny Williams, Chief Marketing Officer at PetSure.“The convergence of pet and human names over recent years reminds us that increasingly, Australians consider their pets as members of the family.
Traditional ‘dog names’ like Scruffy, Spot and Socks are half as popular as they were in the early 2000s. Over the same period, more human-like names like Luna, Ruby and Charlie have soared in popularity as pet names.
And in the Pet Health Monitor, we see that there is more to this story; not only do pets share human names, but there are also increasing similarities in how health conditions are treated in pets and humans. While we are fortunate to have Medicare to help with these costs for humans, for pets, the bills can come as a surprise.”
The stats come from PetSure’s annual report, the Pet Health Monitor. Based on one of the largest and most comprehensive pet health datasets in Australia, the Pet Health Monitor also features useful insights, tips and expert commentary to provide Australian pet parents with an understanding of common pet health trends, conditions, treatment and prevention.
