Cooking Homemade Meals for Pets

Bon A-pet-treat! Cooking up a storm for pets with homemade meals

Pampering pooches and catering to fancy felines with home-made meals is a growing trend amongst Aussie pet parents, with 39% of owners admitting to cooking or making home-made treats for their cats or dogs - according to
PETstock’s Pet Parent Survey 2022.

While creating bark-uterie boards and pup-cakes continue to grow in popularity, it’s important that owners continue to maintain a balanced and healthy diet for their pet, even when they treat them to a home-made meal!

Raw food is a great option to incorporate into homemade meals for pets and works as a fun activity for the entire family.

Creating in the kitchen is such a great bonding exercise for family members and even better when you know what you’re putting on the table for your pet is filled with essential vitamins and nutrients required to live an active, healthy life.

If you opt for a raw diet for your pet, it should be comprised of meat, whole or ground bones, vegetables such as green beans and carrots, or superfoods such as wheatgrass or kelp.

With many raw products available, it can be difficult to know which range will provide your pet with the essential nutrients they need. PETstock’s Glow Raw Canine and Feline ranges are packed full of protein, vitamins, and minerals, perfect for pet parents not knowing where to start or looking to change their pet’s meal plan.

To help pet parents understand the benefits of incorporating raw food into their pet’s diet, PETstock has unpacked commonly asked questions and compiled safety tips for those getting crafty in the kitchen.

Unpacking the ingredients – what’s in Glow Raw pet food?

Glow Raw Canine and Feline follows the BARF principle (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) with an emphasis on raw meat, offal, crushed bone and cartilage and superfoods.

All diets are made in Australia from at least 93% Australian ingredients.

CatsGlow Raw features single source protein – Chicken and Kangaroo - and is packed full of natural ingredients, including superfoods such as cold pressed ground flax seeds, wheatgrass and kelp. Glow Raw Feline recipes are formulated on the natural instincts of a cat, resulting in optimum health, wellbeing, and longevity.

Dogs – Just like feline raw food, Glow Raw Canine is loaded with natural ingredients based on the natural instincts of a dog, supporting their overall health and wellbeing.

Containing only the meat, fat, bone, and offal of one species – Chicken, Lamb, Kangaroo or Mackerel - this range is perfect for dogs with allergies.

What are the benefits of a raw diet?

There are several advantages to feeding your pet a raw diet. From improving joint and bone health, to aiding digestion and supporting metabolism, PETstock has unpacked the key ingredients and their benefits:

✔️ Omega 3 – essential in supporting joint health and maintaining a healthy coat.

✔️ Wheatgrass – rich in vitamins and minerals, wheatgrass aids digestion and liver functions.

✔️ Carrots – rich in beta-carotene which supports healthy eyesight.

✔️ Kelp – nutritious source of vitamins and minerals that supports metabolism functions.

✔️ Australian Chicken – locally sourced, chicken is high in protein aiding muscle and bone development.

✔️ Green beans – full of vitamins and minerals, beans are high in fibre and low in calories.

✔️ Australian Kangaroo – sustainably sourced, Kangaroo is rich in zinc and iron, boosting muscle growth and is one of the leanest red meats available.

At what age can my pet eat raw food?

Dogs and cats of all ages can be fed a raw diet

As they grow, the required ingredients may differ to support their physical development, so it’s important to feed them a ‘puppy’ or ‘kitten’ raw diet as opposed to an ‘adult’ diet when they are young and transitioning to a mature diet for dogs and cats over the age of seven.
