Saskia Adams Wins Community Hero Award

President and Co-Founder of Forever Friends Animal Rescue (FFAR), Saskia Adams, has won the Southside Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Community Hero Award in the 2021 Community Achievement Awards.

The Community Achievement Awards are a celebration of regional communities across Victoria. The Southside Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Community Hero Award recognises people that make significant contributions to their local communities in areas such as health, business, sports and volunteering.

“It was an honour to be even nominated for this award,” Saskia said. “The calibre of all the finalists was inspiring.”

Saskia and a group of fellow animal lovers started FFAR in her inner-city lounge room back in 2011. Soon after, she left a career in publishing to dedicate herself to helping homeless animals full-time. She also lobbies local councils and state governments on many issues relating to animal welfare.

Since 2011, FFAR has grown to be one of the largest volunteer-run charities in Victoria, with over 1,000 team members assisting to rescue and rehome the most vulnerable animals in our community - the homeless, the neglected, the abused, the sick and the elderly. From dogs and cats, to pocket pets and unwanted farm animals, FFAR has rescued and rehomed over 10,000 animals since inception.

The organisation receives no government funding and is currently undertaking its most ambitious project yet: building an Animal Rehabilitation Sanctuary on 100 acres in the Yarra Valley for dogs, cats and farm animals in need.

“The Sanctuary will focus on the medical and behavioural rehabilitation of the most neglected of animals. Currently, FFAR has hundreds of foster carers who open their homes to animals in need, but there is never enough space,” Saskia said.

“The Sanctuary will act as a port in the storm for animals who have experienced severe neglect or abuse and require a little longer to heal. We urgently need to raise another $50,000 in order to complete the project, and be able to save a great many more lives.”
