Hunter Animal Rescue Pets Picnic 2021 - May 23

A Day in the Sun Celebrating our four-legged friends

The 15th Annual Hunter Animal Rescue Pets Picnic will be held on Sunday 23rd May in Speers Point Park (Newcastle) to support our four-legged friends and those who help find them a safe and loving home.

Hunter Animal Rescue (HAR) has been operating since 2004, one of the Hunter’s original rescue organisations. Despite COVID-19 putting a strain on our financial resources, 2020 put into perspective the important role pets play in our lives with every foster placed up for adoption receiving an avalanche of applications some as far away as Perth.

Though our 14th picnic and was put on hold, it didn’t stop HAR from bringing almost 800 vulnerable animals into care for rehabilitation and rehoming through its network made up entirely of volunteers.

HAR still managed, through all the chaos of 2020, to be one chosen as of the finalists for the 2020 JetPets Companion Animal Rescue Awards in the “Outstanding Rescue Group” category for our work with vulnerable animals. The organisation works closely with local pounds and the RSCPA to reduce the number of animals euthanised in these facilities instead placing them into loving homes.

The Hunter Animal Rescue Pets Picnic is a free family event for all ages, and breeds! It will feature market stalls, entertainment and kids activities including pony rides and a jumping castle.

Hunter Animal Rescue will host its own foster cats and dogs in the Cat Cave and Puppy Precinct at the event where attendees have the opportunity to meet their new forever friend. We will be joined on the day by our locally-owned Hunter Sponsor PETQuarters and some of our rescue partners such as the RSPCA.

A raffle will be drawn on the day with some amazing prizes up for grabs with all proceeds going towards the charities work. There will also be competitions for pets in attendance such as best dressed and fastest eater.

"Our pets picnic celebrates our four legged friends and aims to bring people together and educate the public on responsible pet ownership,” Hunter Animal Rescue President Yvette Phillips said.

With thousands of healthy dogs and cats euthanised yearly, Hunter Animal Rescue emphasises the importance of making an educated decision when it comes to bringing a new four legged member into your family.

“The main mission of Hunter Animal Rescue is to give vulnerable animals a second chance at life. A new best friend is a commitment that will bring you joy and love, and we encourage the people of the Hunter to adopt from a rescue group," Phillips said.

The Hunter Animal Rescue Pets Picnic will be held Sunday 23rd May in Speers Point Park from 10am until 2pm.
The event will be officially opened at 10.30 am by the Mayor of Lake Macquarie City, Cr Kay Fraser.
