Pet Food Australia Grain-Free Turkey - Review

Pet Food Australia is an Australian-made grain-free dry dog food and the first dog food with hemp seed oil available in the Australian market.

At this stage, there is only a grain-free Turkey formula which comes in a 4kg bag but we understand a range for our feline friends is expected to be released later this year.

What’s in Pet Food Australia's grain-free Turkey formula?

This new grain-free turkey formula promises to deliver a complete and balanced diet for your dogs.

This is a natural hypoallergenic kibble, free from wheat and wheat gluten. It also contains no corn, soy or rice. This range is free from by-products and GMO ingredients with no added artificial flavours, colours or preservatives which will appeal if your dog suffers from food allergies.

High-quality turkey meal is the first named ingredient followed by chicken meal. Turkey is an excellent lean meat rich in digestible protein, as is chicken.

The third named ingredient is ocean fish meal which will provide essential Omega 3’s and 6’s (great for both skin and coat) so you don’t need to add supplements or meal toppers. So if you’re looking for a dog food with a high-protein content (30%), this is a good option.

Potato and Peas are the next two ingredients on the list which are frequently used as fillers and a source of carbohydrates.

Chicken Fat can be found as the 6th ingredient, an excellent source of energy and nutrients. Dried egg product is also included as another easily digestible source of protein.

We always love the addition of fresh vegetables, fruit and herbs in our dog's food. This formula includes a great mix: Carrot & Spinach, Apple & Blueberry (great source of antioxidants) as well as Alfafa Meal and Rosemary (plant extract).

Hemp Seed Oil is the 7th named ingredient and definitely a novel one in the Australian market. Hemp oil
is deemed to have a multitude of positive benefits:

✔️ Improves your dog’s skin and coat condition (perfect ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fatty acids)
✔️ Anti-inflammatory
✔️ Strengthens the immune system and healthy organ function
✔️ Supports heart health and positive effects on brain function
✔️ Helps relieve anxiety and stress

Based on this profile, it should be added to all dog foods!

There’s also a very long list of added vitamins (A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, D3, E,K3, Biotin, Folic Acid, Niacin), Taurine and minerals (Copper, Iron, Manganese).

Because of the high protein contents, we felt this dry dog food was best suited for a trial with one of our young Malinois rather than our senior (12 year-old) Tervuren who is not as active.

So what did we think of Pet Food Australia’s grain-free Turkey?

The first thing we noticed is the smaller size of the kibble but this is a trend across nearly all the new kibble launches over the past 3 years. This is in line with the growing trend of Australians now opting for smaller dog breeds suited to apartment living. If anything, this forced our dog to eat more slowly as pellets are harder to grab so we're not complaining ...

It is recommended that you feed your dog twice daily rather than all at once but if feeding only dry, you should always provide lots of fresh water. We now soak our dogs’ kibble for a few minutes to make it easier to digest and keep them well hydrated.

The recommended daily serve is 130g/day for a 10kg dog or 300g/day for a 30kg dog. As with all diets, you’ll need to adjust your daily feeding quantity depending on your dog’s age, breed, exercise levels or pre-existing medical conditions.

Using a 4kg bag, w
e managed to feed our two Malinois for around 6.5 days. Doing the maths, we would need to order 5 bags to last a full month so we'd like to see the company bring out larger size bags (18kg or 20kg) to cater for large dogs or multi-dog households and to save on shipping costs!

It would cost only $2.81/day to feed one 30kg dog so we found this new offering to be reasonably good value for money. Your own daily cost will obviously depend on how much you feed your dog(s) so this is an indication only.
