Pets Of The Homeless Giving Day - November 13

Cost of living crisis: Pets Of The Homeless reaches 2 million pet meal milestone to support vulnerable people and pets in need

As the cost of living crisis continues to mount for people and their beloved pets, one charity has reached an incredible milestone in their quest to keep best friends together.

Pets Of The Homeless has just reached their 2 millionth meal distributed to feed hungry pets of people in need, and they are not stopping there.

The charity, whose mission is to help keep vulnerable people and their pets together during tough times, started from humble beginnings nine years ago when founder Yvonne Hong hit the streets of Melbourne with a suitcase full of pet food and a desire to give back.

“Pets play such an important role in our lives, and during times of hardship their companionship can be a huge source of emotional support,” Yvonne said.
“For some people, their pets are all they have.”

The charity established Victoria’s first ever Pet Food Bank in 2019, and today their network of committed volunteers help to pack over 44,000 meals every month to distribute to their network of over 65 community partners across the state.

They also provide veterinary care and safe shelter to people and pets in need.

“Having reached 2 million meals is a source of immense pride for us, but it also brings us a sense of sadness as it reflects the increasing number of individuals who now depend on our assistance to keep their pets fed,” Yvonne said. ⁣“For many people needing support, they will choose to feed their pet before they feed themselves.”

Markham Mackinnon says he wouldn’t know what he would do if Pets Of The Homeless had not helped his best friend Ahsoka with life-saving vet surgery and pet food.

After losing his leg in an accident, Markham relied on a Disability Support Pension to make ends meet. He and his senior Staffy were inseparable, so when Markham discovered worrisome lumps on her body, he was really concerned.
“I was barely making ends meet as it was, so I didn’t know how I was going to cover her vet costs,” Markham said.

Markham had already been accessing pet food from Pets Of The Homeless through his local community food relief organisation, so he reached out to see if they could help his beloved girl.

The charity covered the costs for Ahoska’s two surgeries, which took place over the span of a several months to help her recover.

“She’s back acting like a puppy again,” Markham said. “Thank you so much for helping her.”

Pets Of The Homeless is now asking the community to dig deep for their annual ‘Never Tear Them Apart’ Giving Day Appeal

Donations made from now until Wednesday 13th November will be tripled by some generous gift matchers. This means every dollar raised will have three times the impact, enabling the charity to continue its life-changing work.

They are aiming to raise a mammoth $300,000.

“We know our target is ambitious, especially during such a difficult time,” Yvonne said. “But if our community rallies together, we will be able to focus all of our efforts on helping people and pets for an entire year. We couldn’t do this without their support.”
