Staffy Ahsoka's Life-Saving Surgery thanks to Pets of the Homeless

It’s never been more important to support those struggling with disadvantage, and during September (Aug 27 - Sept 30), the Petstock Foundation will hold its annual Hometown Heroes campaign with the aim to raise $600,000 for local charities across the country - the ‘heroes’ who tirelessly support those who need it most.

One of these charities is Pets of the Homeless Australia (based in Heidelberg Heights, Victoria) which provides food, veterinary care and other support to pet owners in need, like Markham MacKinnon.

Meet Ahsoka, who is Markham's cherished Staffy (aged 12) and has been a part of Markham's life since she was around 4-5 years old.

Ahsoka's story came to Markham's attention through his sister. At that time, Ahsoka's previous guardian was a neighbour of Markham's sister. Following a family tragedy, there was no one available to care for Ahsoka, and she was left alone in a concrete backyard, left to fend for herself.

Aware of Markham's deep affection for dogs, the neighbour reached out and asked if he could provide Ahsoka with a better life. This is how Ahsoka became a treasured member of Markham's family.

Life was good for this pair until a couple of years ago when Markham noticed several worrisome lumps on Ahsoka's legs and abdomen.

Initially, he hoped they were harmless, but the lumps grew in size and began to bleed. Markham knew he had to take action, but his financial situation posed a significant obstacle to treatment.

After losing his leg in an accident, Markham has relied on Disability Support Pension and local food relief providers to make ends meet. His local food charity referred Markham to Pets Of The Homeless. Time was of the essence, so they acted fast to prevent the lumps from causing Ahsoka further discomfort and complications.

Pets Of The Homeless provided support through the Emergency Vet Fund to cover Ahsoka’s surgeries, and contributed $1,000 for emergency treatment. Ahsoka's case was even more pressing, so they fundraised for the additional $3,500 needed to ensure that Ahsoka received the necessary surgery that she urgently required.

Markham says, "Ahsoka is my number one companion and I'd be lost without her. Thank you so much for helping me get through this situation. I haven't changed my way of life, but the cost of living has doubled in recent months. Everything has become more expensive. I have no disposable income.

Whatever I receive just barely covers my bills, and if there's anything left over, it goes toward taking care of Ahsoka. I want to do everything possible for her, but I can't afford to take her to the vet."

Pets Of The Homeless says, "Your support of the Petstock Foundation assists Pets Of The Homeless to provide pet food relief, veterinary care, and safe shelter to people and pets in need. Your donation will help keep people and their pets together - preventing hunger, suffering, abandonment, surrender and loss of the animals they love."
