Aussie pet owners putting Fido and Felix first with five-star dining despite the cost of living crisis
A new pet parent survey shows that five-star dining is well and truly on the menu for Aussie pets. As living costs soar, Australian pet parents are standing firm on one thing – their pets’ food preferences and health.
The survey revealed that over half of Aussie pet parents of dogs and cats are committed to never compromising on their pet’s health and diet – and say no to cutting corners when it comes to their pets’ food quality.
Despite the cost of living crisis, 57% of Aussie pet parents say they would never downgrade their pet’s high-quality food for fear of risking their pets’ health with low quality food. In fact, dogs take the lead with 3 in 5 dog parents (59%) refusing to cut corners versus over half of cat parents (52%).
Furthermore, 80% of Aussie pet owners believe their pets deserve a diet as healthy as their own and 60% say having premium, natural ingredients is paramount when it comes to choosing their pets’ food.
Another key factor for Aussie pet parents is pet palatability. The survey revealed just how important palatability is when choosing pet food with half (50%) of pet parents saying their pet’s taste preference is a key factor when buying pet food.
The survey also revealed that 46% of Aussie pet parents are aware pets can experience food allergies but feel unsure of the correct foods to give their pets. While over half of dog owners (58%) and cat owners (50%) feel educated about allergies and sensitivities, 46% admit to feeling uncertain about which foods are safe to feed their pets if any allergy issues arise.
One way pet parents keep an eye out for potential dietary issues is watching for changes in their pet’s overall behaviour. 40% see excessive scratching and 36% see reduced playfulness as signs of potential dietary issues. A major red flag for pet parents is a change in appetite, with over half of owners linking reduced appetite and lethargy to diet concerns.
The findings of the research have come at a time when the pet food industry is ready for game-changing innovation.
Addiction Pet Foods, pioneers in the pet allergy space, has arrived in Australia to address the toughest dietary challenges pets face, including sensitivities and allergies.
Speaking about the research findings and the launch of Addiction Pet Foods, pet behaviourist Dr Kate Mornement commends Australian pet owners for their commitment. “The results of the survey highlight that Australian pet owners are on the right track when it comes to prioritising their pets and particularly, when it comes to maintaining a healthy diet which can help avoid behavioural issues.
"Just as it's important for humans to maintain a high-quality and nutritious diet, the results indicate that pet owners are taking the same approach with their dogs and cats to support optimal physical and brain health, wellbeing and their cognitive health – which all link to their behaviour.
“Adding to this, pet owners are also aware of the common signs to look for that could indicate diet choices are impacting health and behaviour and are therefore in a better position to make changes as required.
“Investing in a high-quality diet, which includes a nature-led approach and the use of meat-first formulas, grain-free option and novel proteins – will help reduce vet bills in the long run, support pets with allergies and may even improve behaviour,” Dr Kate said.
Overall, what the findings say about pets and their owners is that the right food matters, with almost 90% saying they know nutrition affects their pets’ health – and almost 90% of pet owners understand the link between diet and their pets’ health, from skin and coat conditions and digestion to overall health and happiness.
“It’s fantastic to see that the results show Australian pet parents are actively involved in choosing the right food for their pets to ensure long term health and wellbeing so their furry friends lead happy, healthy lives,” concluded Kate.
