Melbourne’s animal loving kids are set to go bonkers in the upcoming school holidays as they celebrate the launch of Australia’s favourite veterinary-inspired school holiday program Future Vet Kids Camp in their hometown!

Having started in Sydney 14 years ago, the 5-day program has been designed and run by real life veterinarians. It is currently led by identical twin veterinarians Drs Audrey and Alison Shen from Aussie Mobile Vet and the popular Bondi Vet TV show.

The Camp caters to kids aged 9 to 16 years and introduces kids to the wonderful world of Veterinary Medicine. The camp aims to encourages responsible pet ownership and nurture the love and appreciation of all animals and their habitats!

Drs Audrey and Alison are big advocates for animal rescue and charity work, as they’ve been heavily involved in wildlife emergency response and rehabilitation for many years. The in-house twin vet instructors will incorporate their experiences into the camp program.

The Melbourne camp will be held at the St John Bosco Primary school in Niddrie from Tuesday 11th April to Saturday 15th April 2023, during the Victorian school holidays.

The Virtual Online Camp will run concurrently to the HQ Melbourne Camp with the ability for kids to join the classroom virtually and participate with questions in real time.

“It has always been the plan to expand the camp beyond Sydney. With the success and overwhelming interest in Sydney and then Brisbane, we think it is only fair that we offer a program for Melbourne kids,” said Dr Audrey.

“We’ve had some kids who came from Melbourne to attend the Sydney camp, so we know they are super excited that we will be hosting a similar camp in their hometown! I’m excited to cement the program and develop new connections and relationships with vets, specialists and other animal industry professionals in Melbourne.”

Future Vet Kids Camp’s Virtual Online program has also become popular since its first run during the 2021 COVID lockdown, welcoming aspiring young vets from across Australia and all over the world!

“We are running the Virtual Online Camp concurrently to our HQ Melbourne Camp and have added in the ability for kids to join the classroom virtually and ask all questions in real time if they wish!” said Dr Alison, a certified veterinary acupuncturist.
“What I love most about the program is to see so many kids with the same passion learning and enjoying camp together and the lifelong friendships that are made.
“The camp showcases all the opportunities available as veterinarians and other wonderful professions in the animal industry. Many campers return every year to learn more and progress through the camp groups.”

Campers will learn about genetic diseases, pet nutrition, dog behaviour and enrichment, exotic animals, surgery, animal rescue, wildlife conservation and much more!

They will also visit state-of-the-art veterinary hospitals for exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences and other exciting excursions, including Melbourne Zoo and Melbourne University’s Veterinary School.

Drs Alison and Audrey are also excited about the outstanding presenters involved, such as wildlife and exotic vets, animal rescue groups, veterinary specialists, mobile vets and even a visit from the Melbourne Mounted Police and Cat Protection Society of Victoria. The Melbourne camp will also include presentations from the team at Anipal, an amazing company making earth-friendly treats made from Insect Protein!

“Whether or not the kids end up following the path to a career in veterinary medicine, simply being around lots of different animals (from kittens to snakes) and animal lovers from across the country will have such a positive impact on them,” said Dr Alison.

Fundraiser for Melbourne charities

Future Vet Kids Camp is also giving back to the community by donating 6 spots to the charities: Vets For Compassion, Beagle Freedom Australia and Forever Friends Animal Rescue.

Vets for Compassion charity
“As volunteers for Vets For Compassion, we’ve been working closely with them during the recent bushfire and flood disaster work. The charity continues to do great work in Melbourne for our native wildlife and dogs and cats,” said Dr Audrey.

“We are also working with SavourLife by donating four camp places to them, which will go towards their supported charities; Beagle Freedom Australia and Forever Friends Animal Rescue in Melbourne. These charities will use the camp places to generate donations or gift them to supporters of their charity.

Future Vet Kids Camp every year has donated a proportion of their revenue to multiple charities and rescues selected by their presenters at camp. We are excited to educate the next generation on the amazing work that all these charities do to help animals.
“Giving back to those that help animals is very important to the team. It is important to us to educate the next generation on responsible pet ownership and the difference they can make learning from these charities,” said Dr Audrey.
We are excited to have the team from Beagle Freedom and Forever Friends Animal Rescue talk and share their work with the kids.
