The iconic Melbourne institution, Lort Smith this week celebrates the incredible work of its volunteers who are considered the lifeblood of the organisation, which was built on the vision and commitment of some very special volunteers 85 years ago.
Head of Hospital, Dr David Cunliffe said, “Our volunteers are highly dedicated individuals who are an integral part of our organisation. They embrace our role in the community and contribute goodwill, commitment and expertise, which began with Louisa Lort Smith and a group of volunteers back in 1936.”
The organisation celebrating 85 years serving the community, now has almost 400 volunteers who are instrumental in achieving the Lort Smith mission to improve the health and happiness of animals and the people who care for them.
“Our volunteers enable us to extend our mission, especially through our pet therapy, adoption hub teams and foster carers who champion the human-animal bond. Our ability to rehome so many animals each year largely because of the work of our volunteers,” said Dr Cunliffe.
Lort Smith is growing to support even more people in the community with the building of a vet clinic, adoption centre and dog park in Campbellfield, which is due to open in October.
This will mean high-quality, affordable vet care to those in the middle and outer suburbs of Melbourne’s north, north-east and north-west. The team are now seeking some special people to volunteer at Campbellfield.
Dr Cunliffe said, “We have very specific needs for the volunteers at our second site, which will include a vet clinic, the adoption centre (currently in North Melbourne) and a dog park.
“Lort Smith wants to hear from people who live close by and are easily able to get to Campbellfield. Our volunteers must meet a range of criteria, which can be viewed on the Lort Smith website, under our volunteers section,” he said.
Although Lort Smith receives hundreds of request to be on their volunteer registry, they are only seeking volunteers for their Campbellfield site at the moment.
Dr Cunliffe adds, “This week we are recognising our volunteers who give their time and dedicated service which we rely on so much to support disadvantaged people and their animals in the community.
“Thanks for the all the hours, the blood, sweat and tears. We could not do the work we do without our amazing volunteers!” he said.
