POTH: Never Tear Them Apart Appeal | Nov 12

Single mum Noeline Sopp shares an emotional embrace with her dog Ghost at the Pets Of The Homeless (POTH) office as he is safely placed with a temporary foster carer, highlighting the mission of the Never Tear Them Apart Appeal.

The Unspoken Cost-of-Living Crisis Facing Australia's Most Vulnerable Dog Owners

National Call for Support as a Single Charity Keeps 40,000 Paws and Families Together

As the cost-of-living crisis bites deeper, a heart-breaking reality is unfolding across Australia: more people than ever are facing the impossible choice of losing their beloved pets due to financial hardship, emergency housing, or homelessness.

But one dedicated Australian charity, Pets Of The Homeless (POTH), is fighting to keep best friends united, and after a decade of life-changing work, they are now urging dog lovers nationwide to help them reach a major milestone.

The True Meaning of 40,000 Nights

This month, POTH is celebrating two incredible achievements: 10 years of keeping vulnerable Australians and their pets together and providing over 40,000 nights of safe, temporary shelter for pets while their families navigate crisis.

For the pro-rescue community, this statistic isn't just a number—it's a shield against the overstretched shelter system. It means 40,000 times a pet was kept out of a pound or shelter, and 40,000 times a person didn't have to face a crisis alone.
“Forty-thousand nights of safe shelter is not a statistic — it’s 40,000 moments of hope,” says Founder & CEO Yvonne Hong.
“It’s 40,000 times a person could rest knowing their pet was loved, safe, and waiting to come home. We are the lifeline that allows people to choose loyalty over desperation.”

The Heartbreak of Surrender Averted

Founded from humble beginnings in 2015 when Yvonne Hong hit the streets of Melbourne with a suitcase of pet food, POTH now offers essential support nationwide, including:
  • Emergency Pet Food & Supplies
  • Urgent Veterinary Care
  • Safe Shelter (including emergency boarding and foster care)
This support gives people the crucial breathing space to find pet-friendly housing, recover from illness, or escape domestic violence—all without losing the non-judgmental love of their companion animal.

A Dog Owner’s Loyalty: Noeline and Ghost

The impact is clearest in the story of people like single mum Noeline Sopp. Facing homelessness, the idea of surrendering her beloved dog, Ghost, was devastating.

Thanks to POTH, Ghost has been placed in a loving foster home until the family can secure pet-friendly housing.

“I am so happy that I know he is being taken care of,” Noeline shared.
“I am not giving up on him because of our circumstances. He is loyal to me, and I will be loyal to him.”
This is the commitment POTH supports: the unbreakable, two-way loyalty between an owner and their dog, regardless of circumstance.

Triple Your Impact Today: Never Tear Them Apart Giving Day

To continue this life-changing work and meet the surging demand, Pets Of The Homeless is holding its annual ‘Never Tear Them Apart’ Giving Day.

  • The Goal: $450,000 for their 10th anniversary—their biggest target yet.
  • The Power: Every single dollar donated will be tripled by generous gift matchers.

This means a $50 donation becomes $150, directly funding more safe nights, more vet care, and more reunions. Reaching this ambitious target will allow the charity to focus all its efforts on supporting vulnerable people and their pets for an entire year.

How to help

Your donation will be tripled between now and Wednesday, November 12. Help POTH keep best friends together.

About Pets of the Homeless

Pets Of The Homeless (POTH) is a not-for-profit working to keep vulnerable Australians and their companion animals together, ensuring that the critical bond between a person and their pet is never broken by hardship.

POTH operates on a pro-rescue principle: by alleviating the burden of essential pet care (including the provision of pet food, vital veterinary treatment, and safe temporary shelter), they prevent beloved animals from being surrendered into already overcrowded shelters during times of crisis, homelessness, or domestic violence.
