‘Snow Much Fun!’: Snow Dogs Photography Experience Returns To Dinner Plain, Victoria

“Watching them discover snow for the first time is just pure magic!”

Ever wondered if your dog would love playing in the snow? For the past decade, international award-winning pho-dog-rapher and dog travel adventurer Kerry Martin has been capturing these magical moments in her iconic Snow Dogs Photography Experience, set in the rare dog-friendly alpine village of Dinner Plain, Victoria.

“The truth is that most dogs love the snow,” said Kerry from Puppy Tales Photography. “It’s a playground like no other they’ll ever experience, from the crispy crackling crust to the flying powder, and it brings out the playful puppy personality in every dog. Watching them discover snow for the first time is just pure magic.”

Now celebrating its 10th year, Snow Dogs has become an annual favourite for dog lovers across Australia, with many returning year after year for the magical experience.

One of Kerry’s most devoted fans is Sunny Teng, who has several dogs and has done several photography sessions over the years, including her favourite Snow Dogs Photography Experience.

“My pets are a very important part of my life,” said Sunny. “I never knew that I could love my dogs any more than I already did.
When I look at the photos Kerry took of them in the snow, my heart is filled with pride and so much love that it threatens to burst!”

One of Sunny’s dogs, Commander Spock, first joined a Snow Dogs session in 2013 and loved “running and playing on the fresh powder, happy and carefree,” exclaimed Sunny.

“There is only one thing that Spock didn’t like about the snow; it was having to leave the snow fields! I was so surprised to find out how natural and with ease he moved on the snow. It was almost as if he lived in a snow covered country all his life although it was actually only his first time seeing snow!”

Experiences like Sunny’s are exactly what inspired Kerry to create Snow Dogs!

“I know how hard it can be to find holidays that cater to both humans and their pets, so I wanted to create something truly special for dogs and their people. Snow changes everything; the light, the atmosphere, even your dog’s personality!” said Kerry.

Dinner Plain a uniquely dog-friendly snow destination

“It’s also incredibly rare to find dog-friendly snow destinations in Australia due to national park restrictions and environmental protections in alpine regions, which is why Dinner Plain is so special. It’s one of the only alpine locations where dogs can run, play and explore, and we get to capture every snowy, tail-wagging moment!”

For Kerry, Snow Dogs was born from her own love of sharing the snow with Keiko, her Japanese Spitz and Summer, her Border Collie cross.

“Every photography experience is beautiful, memorable and unique, as the conditions are constantly changing, turning every session into a stunning adventure,” she said.

"I can remember little details of every dog I've photographed there, from the crazy snowball jumping antics and hopping across the fresh snow, to the quiet moments snuggled together to watch a beautiful sunrise, and delicate snowflakes perched on whiskered noses.”

Many dog breeds you'd expect to see in the snow have been behind the lens – from Huskies, Newfoundlands and Lapphunds to some more unexpected ones who had just as much fun, like Dalmatians, Pugs and Oodles. Dogs have also ranged in size from 4 to 60 kg, and in age from playful puppies to 15-year-old seniors (still young at heart!).

Now that Kerry has reached the 10-year milestone of bringing 'snow much fun’ and countless incredible moments to dogs and their pawrents, she’s excited to keep the magic going!

“I hope to go back in future years and continue to share the wonder of the snow with as many dogs as I can!” she said.

Snowventures with Your Dog: Top Tips for a Safe & Fun Trip

Planning a snow adventure with your dog? Dog travel adventurer and award winning dog photographer Kerry Martin shares some quick tips for a paw-sitively unforgettable time!

✔️ Before You Go: If your dog is young, old or has health issues, get a vet check to ensure they’re snow-fit. Research your drive — snow areas can be remote with minimal facilities. Drive time may take longer, so allow for breaks and careful travel. Bring a first aid kit for both hoomans and hounds.

✔️ Car Ready? Switch to Alpine Diesel (if needed), pack snow chains and learn to fit them beforehand. Waterproof seat covers will save your interior from soggy snow-dogs.

✔️ Doggo Gear: Warm, waterproof jackets are a must for small, short-haired or lean pups. Trim fluffy toe pads to prevent ice balls and consider boots or paw wax. Pack towels, water, a bowl, poo bags and maybe reflective gear for visibility.

✔️ Don’t Forget: Bring treats (for both of you!), a camera and extra towels or blankets. When you arrive, be enthusiastic and encouraging while letting your dog explore and discover at their pace. Always watch for signs they're getting too cold, such as shivering or the "carry me now" eyes.

Most importantly, have a ball creating heart-warming memories in the chilliest conditions!
