Tips for Spring-Cleaning Your Car for Pet Owners

As the weather warms up and we're all heading out to the outdoors with our furry friends, we need to make sure we are giving our cars some extra love to keep pet odours at bay!

Here are some handy tips for spring-cleaning your car, shared with us by Barb de Corti, CEO of sustainable cleaning products company ENJO.

1. What are the reasons for dogs leaving an odour in your car?

There are a few reasons why your furry friends can leave odours in your car:

✔️ First up, natural body odours due to their skin and coat can become more pronounced in an enclosed space like your vehicle. All dogs have this to varying degrees.

✔️ Their saliva is another source of smell - bacteria, diet, and genetics contribute to drool that leaves a musty or sour odour. Even perfectly healthy dogs can leave smelly saliva on seats, windows, and other surfaces.

✔️ Wet fur is unsurprisingly one of the biggest sources of smelliness especially if your breed loves to go for a swim. The combination of water with natural oils and bacteria often produces a very distinctive and strong odour.

✔️ Toilet accidents: If your dog has an accident in the car, whether it’s urine, faeces, or vomit, the smell can linger long after the mess is cleaned up. These substances can seep into the upholstery and leave a persistent odour.

✔️ Dirty fur: If a dog has been playing outside, rolling in dirt, or coming into contact with other smelly substances, they can track those odours into the car via their fur and paws.

✔️ Dogs with ear infections often have a noticeable smell emanating from their ears, which can transfer to the car’s interior.

✔️ Finally, dogs with certain skin conditions or allergies might have a stronger odour due to the oils and bacteria on their skin.

2. Ways to prevent bad canine odours in your car

To minimise doggy car smells, make sure you clean your car (and your dog!) regularly using pet-safe cleaning products like ENJO’s Fabric Glove and Car Glove which cleans soft and hard surfaces with only water.

For efficiency, you need cleaning equipment that is quick and easy to use and will help minimise odours in just a few minutes, also look for fibres that actually lift dirt and grime without muscle or toxic chemicals which are harmful for your pet.

Also use seat covers and other preventative measures like getting your pet to sit in one particular area of the car to make it easier to keep the car odour-free.

3. If you notice a smell in your car - what is the best way to remove it?

Odour in the car tends to be trapped in car seats, and car mats/carpets. Baking soda, activated charcoal and promoting air circulation is the best way to get rid of car smells. You can get charcoal bags and leave them in your vehicle overnight to absorb odours.

Sprinkle seats and carpets with baking soda and vacuum after a few hours or overnight. Simply pop your window open to let the fresh air in to get rid of any residual odours.

4. Best process step by step for removing stubborn odours

1. Start by inspecting the car to locate the source of the smell. Check seats, carpets, floor mats, and the trunk for any spills, food, rubbish, or other sources of odour. Get rid of debris like food, rubbish, dog toys, blanket. You may need to give these items a good wash before returning them to the car.

2. Next thoroughly vacuum seats, carpets, floor mats
, and other surfaces to remove dirt, crumbs, and dust.

Use an upholstery cleaner such as ENJO Fabric Glove and Car / Outdoor Miracle which is suitable for all car seats to clean upholstery.
The fibre technology will reach deeper than any other conventional product to lift dirt out fabric, leather or synthetic.

Since it only uses water with the product you will leave no harmful chemical residue which pets may absorb through their paws or tongue.

3. Use leave-in odour absorbers
. Sprinkle baking soda on seats and carpets. Let it sit for several hours or overnight, then vacuum it up. Baking soda is excellent at absorbing odours. Finally put a bag of activated charcoal in the car to work its magic overnight. Charcoal is excellent at absorbing persistent smells.

4. Air out the car by leaving windows open on a dry, breezy day. This allows fresh air to circulate and carry away the bad smells.

5. Prevent future odours with regular cleaning and vacuuming. This prevents odour build-up. Keep a small container of baking soda or activated charcoal in the car to continuously absorb odours.

Products and tools needed for Spring-Cleaning:
