Pound Paws & Bupa Dog Appreciation Day - September 30

Pound Paws and Bupa Tamworth Unite for a Day of Canine Celebration

Get ready for some tail-wagging excitement as Pound Paws and Bupa Tamworth come together to celebrate all things canine at their Dog Appreciation Day this Saturday 30th September 2023.

Did you know that a simple pat or cuddle with a dog can reduce blood pressure, alleviate chronic pain, and stimulate memory?

Pound Paws
, an Australian Animal Welfare Charity, is thrilled to continue its heart-warming partnership with Bupa Aged Care, bringing rescue pets and senior citizens in nursing homes across Australia closer together.

This impactful collaboration seeks to combat feelings of solitude among the elderly by facilitating the adoption and fostering of shelter pets while also involving the local community for a day of fun at their premises.

The benefits of bringing dogs and the elderly together are immeasurable. For elderly pet owners, who often live alone or in group facilities, pets can be a source of reduced stress, lower blood pressure, increased social interaction, physical activity, and even opportunities to learn.

Elle Eckersley, Bupa Aged Care Tamworth Manager, expressed, “We are so excited to be a part of this amazing initiative and to raise awareness for a wonderful charity. For our residents, it’s a great opportunity to experience first-hand the transformative therapeutic benefits of animal companions, while also sharing a day of fun activities together with friends and family of Bupa Tamworth, but also our wider Tamworth community”.

Brittany, Founder of Pound Paws, shared her thoughts, saying, It's been incredibly heart-warming to see the connections that blossomed between the senior Greyhounds and the Aged Care Residents at our inaugural event with Bupa last month. It was clear that this event brought much-needed help and support to both groups, and we're excited to carry this mission forward across Australia”.

One of the main factors contributing to pets ending up in pounds is the lack of education on how to be a responsible pet owner and the responsibilities that come with it. Pound Paws will use this day as an opportunity to invite members of the public to the premises to attend educational talks from various local experts.

This includes a session focused on the integration of rescue pets into new homes, hosted by a variety of professional dog trainers.

The event will involve two local rescue groups to the Tamworth region, Greyhound Re-Homing, a group dedicated to rescuing Greyhounds that find themselves homeless. As well as Paws For Life Rescue, a rescue group which works alongside Tamworth Companion Animal Shelter, rescuing both strays and surrenders. They will both be involved in the Rescue Dog Adoption Parade that will take place on stage, where the public can learn more about their mission and how to get involved in helping.

Participants can look forward to a wide range of activities that cater to everyone's interests. These activities include pet-themed arts and crafts for the elderly residents making snuffle mats, live music performed by Matt Barratt, local pet market stalls, face-painting, educational talks on pet ownership, guided walks around the premises with rescue dogs, and a relaxation area for Therapy Dogs and humans to unwind together.

At 12.45pm tails will be wagging, as doggie entrants are invited on stage to enter Best Dog Trick or Costume competition hosted by an array of VIP Judges, ranging from Tamworth Deputy Mayor Cr Judy Coates, BUPA Aged Care Tamworth Manager Elle Eckersley and Jodi from Greyhound Re-Homing.

Pound Paws is thrilled to announce this event at Bupa Aged Care Tamworth, scheduled from 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday, September 30th. The event warmly welcomes the public to join in the festivities, which include a myriad of enjoyable activities for all age groups.

Pound Paws eagerly anticipates the gathering at Bupa Tamworth, a paw-some event designed to raise awareness about pet adoption, responsible pet ownership, and celebrating the wonderful companionships shared with our furry friends.
