Introducing Braxton, Petbarn’s Biggest Pet Loser for 2018!
This week, Petbarn announced Braxton the dog from Queensland as the winner of the Biggest Pet Loser for 2018. After committing to a personalised 12-week health and fitness program, Braxton lost a massive 9 kg, totalling almost 22 percent of his overall body weight. Second place went to Scout from NSW and third place to Zeus from VIC.
Pet obesity is a rising problem in Australia, with an estimated 41% of dogs and 32% of cats being classified as overweight. This is a problem not only for the pets’ quality of life day-to-day, but can also lead to a multitude of serious health problems long term.
To help combat the issue, Petbarn teamed up with celebrity health and fitness trainer Sam Wood for the second year of the competition to create a 12-week weight loss program to help Aussie owners and their pets get into shape and improve their overall health together.
Braxton’s owner, Storm knew that she had to make a dramatic change to their lifestyles, with Braxton weighing 41.5kg at the start of the competition.
Out of hundreds of entries, the paw-some pair were chosen along with nine other pets and owners to compete the title of Australia’s Biggest Pet Loser for 2018.
“This competition changed mine and Braxton’s life!
We found exercising together was a great way for us to not only improve our health, but it also strengthened our bond. I became more conscious of how important it is to work on our health and fitness so I’m looking forward to keeping up these habits for myself and Braxton.” Storm said.
Sumeena Parimu, Marketing Manager Retail at Petbarn says that not only have there been astonishing results from pets, but from their owners too.
“The pairs are now living happier and healthier lives together after following their tailored health programs from either Sam Wood or Greencross Vets to meet their individual nutrition, exercise and activity needs. We are so proud that we were able to facilitate this and help both people and their pets work towards a healthier future,” Sumeena said.
The winner was judged based on the percentage loss of their overall weight and prizes were awarded to first, second and third place. Coming in close second place was NSW pet, Scout who lost a significant 5.7 kg, equalling to 21 percent of her total body weight.

“The Biggest Pet Loser participants have set an excellent example for pets across the country who also need to shed a few unwanted kg. Pet obesity is a real concern for Aussie pets and can lead to severe health concerns including heart problems, diabetes and arthritis. I encourage pet parents to take the leap and get their furry friends in shape before they develop serious health concerns,” said Dr Chay.
