12 Must-Watch Movies for Dog Lovers

June 19 is officially National Pets in Film Day! Perhaps you can make this day even special by watching a movie that features your favourite dog character?

Here are some of our all times favourites! This list is obviously subjective and we could have added a few more... Did your personal favourite make our list?

1. Marley & Me (2008)

After their wedding, newspaper writer John Grogan and his wife Jennifer move to Florida. In an attempt to stall Jennifer's "biological clock", John gives her a Labrador puppy.

Whilst Marley quickly grows into a 100-pound dog, he loses none of his puppy energy or rambunctiousness and he certainly gains no self-discipline. Marley's antics give John rich material for his newspaper column. As the Grogans have children of their own, Marley continues to test everyone's patience by acting like the world's most impulsive dog. It does not matter how many times you watch this movie, it will remind you of your dog's antics and you will cry...

2. Red Dog (2011)

This is the story of a legendary lovable red dog who roamed Western Australia's Pilbara region looking for his original master "Have you seen John?", finding his way into the hearts of everyone he met, bringing people and communities together.
The real red dog was a Kelpie / Cattle Dog cross who died on November 21st, 1979. His statue remains on the road to Dampier. This movie is another tear jerker and is so quintessentially Australian!

3. Eight Below (2006)

After an expedition in the Antarctic, sled dog trainer Jerry Shepherd has to evacuate the polar base with his colleagues due to the proximity of a heavy snow storm. He ties his dogs to be rescued shortly after, but the mission is called-off and the dogs are left alone to fend for themselves during winter. For six months, Jerry tries to find a sponsor for a rescue mission while his dogs fight for survival. We love our arctic breeds and this story had us cheering for the dogs all the way through! This incredible movie is based on a Japanese Antarctic expedition in 1958.

4. Up (2009)
Seventy-eight year old Carl Fredricksen travels to Paradise Falls in his home equipped with 500 balloons, inadvertently taking a young Boy Scout stowaway with him. On their journey they discover many new friends including a talking dog.
The dogs definitely steal the show in this Pixar animation film and it made us wish our dogs could talk too!

5.
The Fox and the Hound (1981)

When an adopted fox and a to-be hunting hound become inseparable friends as pups, their friendship grows stronger every day in their "childhood." But as they grow older, they grow farther and farther apart, to the day when the two old comrades bond is put the ultimate test.
Definitely an all-time favourite growing up...

6. Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009)

In Bedridge, Professor Parker Wilson finds an abandoned dog at the train station and takes it home with the intention of returning the animal to its owner. He finds that the dog is an Akita and names him Hachikō. However, nobody claims the dog so his family decides to keep Hachi. Best on a true heartbreaking story...

7. A Dog's Life (1918)

This is an American short silent film written, produced and directed by Charlie Chaplin. Poor Charlie lives in a vacant lot. He tries to get a job but when he gets to the head of the employment line the jobs are gone. Back "home" he rescues Scraps, a bitch being attacked by other strays. Together they manage to steal some sausages from a lunch wagon.

They meet dance hall singer Edna who is an unwilling companion to the clientele. After a few twists and turns, Charlie, Edna and Scraps end up living happily ever after.

8. The Lady and The Tramp (1955)

Lady, a golden Cocker Spaniel, meets up with a mongrel dog who calls himself the Tramp. He is obviously from the wrong side of town, but happenings at Lady's home make her decide to travel with him for a while. This turns out to be a bad move, as no dog is above the law.
Ah, that spaghetti scene....No first date could ever live up to it!

9. 101 Dalmatians

Pongo and Perdita have a litter of 15 puppies. Cruella De Vil takes a fancy to the pups, and wants to get hold of them, as well as more pups, to make herself a lovely Dalmatian skin coat... Cruella hires some thugs to kidnap the pups and hold them at her mansion. Will Pongo and Perdita find them in time? We much prefer the original animated version to the later remakes...

10. Best in Show (2000)

This is a hilarious mockumentary on dog shows. Best in Show features a documentary crew covering various competitors and their dogs before, during and after their performance in the 125th annual Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show. This dog show brings out the essence of these colourful dog owners and handlers. Who will be the best in show?

11. Turner and Hooch (1989)

Scott Turner has 3 days left in the local police department before he moves to a bigger city to get some "real" cases. Then Amos Reed is murdered and the closest thing to a witness in this case is Amos Reed's dog, Hooch (a Dogue de Bordeaux or French Mastiff) and Scott Turner has to take care of him to avoid him being "put to sleep".Tom Hanks’ character learns what every dog lover already knows: no matter how much furniture they chew or how much they drool, there is nothing a dog can do to make you fall out of love with them!

Be ready for the new family comedy Show Dogs - a thematic crossbreeding of Turner & Hooch and Best in Show - set to hit Australian screens on July 5, 2018.

Show Dogs stars a charming and lovable cast of talking canine characters, including hero Max (voiced by Chris “Ludacris” Bridges), a rugged lone wolf Rottweiler NYPD police dog. Max and his human FBI partner (Will Arnett) are investigating the kidnapping of a baby panda by an underground network of illegal animal traders when they get a tip that the crime ring is planning to sell the panda at the prestigious Canini Invitational Dog Show

Macho Max must undergo a makeover with the help of a seasoned trainer (Natasha Lyonne) – mud baths, ballet lessons, a Brazilian waxing – to go undercover and thwart the plot. In the hands of his new human handler Frank, Max gets in touch with his inner show dog, and learns that trusting the help of others can sometimes be more rewarding than working alone.

12. Frankenweenie (2012)

We have to disclose that we are huge fans of Tim Burton's fantastic imaginary worlds so this choice may not appeal to everyone...

When young Victor's pet dog Sparky (who stars in Victor's home-made monster movies) is hit by a car, Victor decides to bring him back to life the only way he knows how. But when the bolt-necked "monster" wreaks havoc and terror in the hearts of Victor's neighbours, he has to convince them (and his parents) that despite his appearance, Sparky's still the good loyal friend he's always been.

So on this cold wintry night, grab that popcorn bowl, hug your dog and happy watching!

RSPCA NSW Clear the Shelters - February 24-26

RSPCA NSW are aiming to Clear the Shelter this weekend with $29 adoption fees state-wide for all animals great and small, regardless of age or species, in an attempt to find new homes for the hundreds of animals in care across the state.

“It’s all about finding forever homes for all our animals and giving that extra incentive for people looking for a new pet a good reason to adopt, instead of shop through somewhere like Gumtree or backyard breeders,” comments RSPCA NSW Head of Animal Care Services Brendon Neilly.

A menagerie of animals are looking for their forever homes: not just puppies and dogs, kittens and adult cats but pocket pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs, even livestock such as goats, Shetland ponies, pigs and ducks will all be available for adoption this weekend.

Last year  583 animals were rehomed during Clear the Shelter, which was 81% of animals available for adoption. This year, RSPCA NSW are aiming to have every single animal find their new forever home.

RSPCA NSW currently have 596 animals available state-wide, some having spent over 450 days in their care.

Normal adoption procedures apply, including desexing and microchipping, vaccinations, veterinary checks and behavioural procedures, as well as a one-on-one with prospective new adoptive parents, to ensure all our animals go to great homes. RSPCA NSW is also committed to making contact with each new adoptive family at both three and six months.

“We have monitored this promotion carefully and the evidence shows that there is no higher return rate whatsoever, and no negative impacts for the animal’s welfare. The majority of people are already looking at adopting a pet, and this special adoption drive helps them make that decision to adopt, not shop,” concludes Neilly.

Anyone looking for a new addition to their family is urged to visit an RSPCA NSW shelter, Care Centre or NSW Petbarn Adoption centres.

When: Friday 24th to Sunday 26th February 2017

Where: All 10 RSPCA NSW shelters, 2 Care Centres (Tuggerah and Rouse Hill) and NSW Petbarn Adoption Centres.

Visit the RSPCA’s Clear the Shelters page for further information.

Don’t panic if you miss this weekend as you can always view all the animals available for adoption near you at adoptapet.com.au

If you decide to adopt, you may find those tips on "Bringing home a rescue dog" useful.

Top Boredom Busters for Dogs

Could your dog be bored? It is quite common for dogs to be left alone in the backyard or inside the home for long stretches of time during the day while you are at work or running errands. Without anything to occupy themselves, your pooches may find themselves in mischief to stay entertained.

Signs of boredom can include:

  • Barking / Whining
  • Digging
  • Chewing or other destructive behaviours
  • Following you around when you are at home

Lots of problem behaviours can be avoided by providing your dogs with something to do while you are away. Make sure that you mix it up with different toys and games to keep their minds working! Advice from animal behaviourists and dog trainers is to rotate their toys daily (don't leave them all out) as otherwise your dog will get bored with all of them!

The Dog Miracle Puzzle is a versatile dog puzzle game and you get multiple challenge games in one.

This moderately difficult puzzle game comes with a variety of stackable pieces that have treat compartments, so you can hide as many treats as you want for your dog to find. Stack and position the pieces in any way you want: the combinations are endless!

The Nina Ottosson’s Dog Miracle Puzzle will keep your dog engaged in mentally stimulating activities, perfect for those cold and rainy days!

RRP: $39.95 at www.luckypet.com.au

When it’s time for a meal, why not use a treat dispensing toy or simply make your dog do a few tricks to work for it? If you feed kibble you can also try hiding pieces around the house. Studies have found that dogs prefer earning treats to simply being given extras. Working is not only something to keep them occupied, it gives them a purpose.

The Dog Pyramids (Soft and Quiet) are fun activity toys to be filled with dog treats. They wobble, rock and randomly throw out pieces of treats when your dog pushes it around with its paws and nose to play.

This is fun brain training for your dog due to the fact that the pyramid has irregular movements.

Made of soft and strong TPE, a material similar to rubber, for quiet play inside the house but it can also be used outdoors.

Available in Medium or Large.

RRP: from $18.95 at www.dogtrainingproducts.com.au

The Busy Buddy Squeak n Treat Booya is essentially a treat dispensing toy with a built-in squeaker for stimulating play. Perfect for small kibble and dry dog treats.

The patented treat meter randomly dispenses treats during play keeping your dogs actively engaged, while redirecting potentially destructive chewing behaviour. The squeak adds to the excitement, giving extra play incentive.

Made from natural rubber so the Booya is dishwasher safe.

Chew strength: Medium (not for heavy chewers). Available in Small, Medium and Large.

RRP: from $11.99 at https://au.petsafe.net

The Home Alone range from Aussie Dog Products is designed to entertain your dog whilst at home alone. The hanging bungee ball toy provides hours of tug-of-war fun in the backyard and may help prevent boredom, barking, separation anxiety and the destruction of your garden

This toy is made up of a sturdy plastic ball with an internal rattle and a durable loop for pulling. This is mounted onto a thick rope and bungee strap that springs back when pulled and released. Simply hang in a sturdy/safe place, place dry food in the ball (optional) which will rattle around and be dispensed during play.

Available in 5 sizes from Mini to Extra Large.

RRP: from $57.40 at www.aussiedog.com.au and from online resellers.

The Kong Bounzer compresses when grabbed and then bounces back to its regular shape to encourage play. It also features a handle for easy throwing and games of fetch.

You obviously achieve more interesting bounces if you throw the Bounzer around for your dog but we’ve seen our dogs happily pick it up by the handle and drop it all by themselves so they quickly understood how to obtain maximum fun.

It has handled the jaw pressure of our Malinois for months so this is certainly one tough dog toy! Available in Medium, Large and Extra Large from pet retail stores and online.

For details, please visit
www.kongcompany.com/en-au

The Crazy Bounce is an unpredictable bounce and retrieving toy that is sure to keep your dog entertained with its erratic bounce design and all natural rubbery chewiness.

Made in the USA from Puppyprene 2.0, SodaPup's all-natural proprietary rubber compound which provides durability without sacrificing chewiness. Best suited to medium to extra large dogs.

While no dog toy is indestructible, the Crazy Bounce's solid rubber construction holds up to the strongest chompers. Help your dog fight boredom with this fun new toy.

RRP: $24.95 from www.roverpetproducts.com.au

Long lasting chewy treats are great to keep your pet occupied when they're alone. Rather than buying plastic, synthetic toys you can now easily find a wide variety of natural alternatives both in pet stores, at your local markets and online!

Featuring Chewy Brutes (Large Size)
Looking for a cruelty free alternative? Dog antlers are naturally shed, meaning they fall from the deer without any human involvement.

Unlike nylon or rubber alternatives, they're packed with nutrition: dogs get protein and minerals (zinc, phosphorus, iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium) from chewing on antlers.
Chewing is a natural stress reliever and most dogs find antlers irresistible. They are odourless, non-messy and they also last a very long time! Seek advice and select the part and size appropriate for your dog's breed and chewing strength.

RRP: from $12.00 from www.antlersfordogs.com.au

The BECO Bone is one of a range of toys made from a revolutionary new Rice Husk Rubber. It is 100% natural, non-toxic, eco-friendly and completely safe for the most enthusiastic dogs! This means however much your dogs chew they can't taste anything toxic.

The BECO Bone is also vanilla scented. The extra bouncy rice husk rubber makes the BECO Bone great for fetch!

It comes in Blue or Pink and two sizes: Small or Medium.

RRP: $18.99-$34.49 at www.petcircle.com.au

The PetSafe® Automatic Ball Launcher is a new interactive way of playing fetch with your dog(s). This water-resistant launcher is great for both indoor and outdoor use.

You can train your dog to return the ball directly to the launcher.

Multiple built-in safety sensors keep pets and people safe while playing fetch and the automatic rest mode (after 15 min) makes sure your dog does not get overworked.

RRP: $199.99 from https://au.petsafe.net

Digging can be a self-rewarding behaviour and as dogs find it so enjoyable, digging can prove difficult to control or stop. If you want to prevent unauthorised landscaping efforts in your backyard, maybe you could create an approved digging area?

If you're terrible at DIY, clam shells are usually sold in pairs so you could use one side as a splash pool and the other as a dedicated sand pit. You can fill the area with loose dirt or sand or a combination of both.

To encourage your dog to use his new sand or dirt pit, hide and bury some of your dog’s treats, or toys just below the surface. You may need to show your dog how to uncover one or two hidden items and then reward your dog with praise when he uncovers a treat by himself...

New garden bed safe so now!

This suggestion is probably more to do with alleviating your own boredom and separation anxiety issues than your dog's!

The Petcube Camera allows you to watch, talk to and play with your pet using your smartphone, no matter where you are in the world.

Featuring a wide-angle (138º) camera along with real time HD video so you can see your pet easily. You can also talk to your pet as the camera has a built-in microphone and speaker. With the unique laser pointer toy - cats love it ! - you can play with your pet from your smartphone.

The Petcube app also allows you to share cute photos of your dog - taken from your phone or by the Petcube Camera – on social media networks.

PetSafe® Automatic Ball Launcher for Dogs – Review

Your dog will have a great time playing fetch with the new PetSafe® Automatic Ball Launcher. This launcher is great for both outdoor and indoor interactive play. It also comes with two standard-sized tennis balls and a universal power cord / AC adaptor.

HOW DOES THE AUTOMATIC BALL LAUNCHER WORK?

Simply place a tennis ball in the hopper (it can hold up to 3 at a time), then send your dog to fetch when the ball is launched. In time, you should be able to teach your dog to return the ball directly into the hopper to play again.

You can choose from 9 distance settings - the launcher shoots tennis balls between 2.5 to 9 metres  and 6 angle settings - up to a 45 degree angle. This allows for both outdoor and safe indoor play on a rainy day - you don't want to break your collectables!

To adjust the launch range, simply use the "Tennis Ball Knob": pull and turn left to increase the distance (the default setting is at the lowest range of 2.5m). To increase the angle, simply pull and turn the "Paw Knob" to the left.

Multiple built-in safety sensors keep pets and people safe while playing fetch and the automatic rest mode (15 minutes of play will be followed by a 15-minute rest) will ensure your dog does not get overworked.

Remember to always turn the power off and even if the unit is water-resistant, always store it inside when not in use.

HOW TO GET STARTED WITH YOUR DOG?

First impressions: what is this new contraption mum?
With the unit turned off, we first allowed our dogs to approach the unit at their own pace, letting them sniff and explore until they were comfortable. We practiced a few basic commands starting a couple of metres away then gradually moved closer to the unit, rewarding them with treats throughout.

Once they all appeared relaxed next to the launcher (it may take a few minutes or a few sessions depending on your dog), it was time to get them used to the (loud) sound the unit makes when launching the ball

Again we started at a few meters' distance, watching their reaction when the machine first beeped then launched the ball. Only when your dog appears relaxed and unconcerned about the noises should you move closer to the launcher so that it is always a positive experience! If your dogs are completely unphased by the sounds and are ready to fetch the ball straight away, just let them do so!

Because of the in-built safety sensor feature, you need to ensure that both yourself and your dog stand either to the side or at least 2 metres away from the front of the unit when the launcher is turned on, otherwise you will be forever waiting!
This is when treats come in handy to teach your dogs which position you’d like them to start in. Once the ball launches, you can encourage them to begin the chase.

You can train your dog to return the ball directly to the launcher and drop it in by trading a tasty treat each time he drops the ball into your hand. Progressively start placing your hand above the hopper and reward with a treat every time he drops the ball, progressively phase out the use of the treats.

You can connect your unit to an outdoor power point (using the Power Adaptor) or if you don't want to trip over cords, there's the option to use
6 D-alkaline batteries. The launcher features a handy ergonomic handle to help carry the unit with ease.

WHAT WE LIKE

We do expect naysayers comment but “why do you need a robot to throw a ball for your dogs, can't you do it yourself?". First, we’re not suggesting to leave it with your dogs alone all day: the Petsafe automatic ball launcher is not a replacement for their daily walks and other physical or mental enrichment activities. All balls are potentially a choking hazard and a heavy chewer may decide to taste the actual launcher as well! We'd never recommend leaving your dogs with the launcher unsupervised as it is not a dog sitter!

With 41% of Australian dogs being overweight, any incentive to get dogs (and their owners) moving gets our tick of approval. If you're unable to walk your dogs one day or there's no offleash park in your area, you could do a lot worse than providing them with 10-15 mn of brisk fetch but please always consider if this activity is appropriate for your dog's age and physical shape.

OUR VERDICT

In our experience there’s a palpable sense of excitement when we bring the automatic ball launcher down into the yard : our dogs clearly know what’s coming and for whatever reason it gets them really interested… Our two rescue Malinois clearly did not learn to play during the puppy stage and at 9 month-old Porthos had no idea what fetching a ball was all about. He still shows little interest in the concept however this way he gets more engaged and he's happy to chase the tennis ball!

Our three dogs tend to get a bit competitive and they take turns being the first one to catch the ball  - even if delivering it back when asked is still very much hit and miss!

Because our dogs did not come with a "pause" button, we found the automatic rest mode was a great feature. It's all too easy for us to lose track of time when we play with our dogs.
Our oldest furkid, Conner, is now officially a senior  - though nobody told him  - and if we're not careful he can over-exercise when it comes to fetching balls...

The features allowing to control the distance and angle settings means this unit can be used safely both indoors and outdoors by dogs of all shapes and sizes (over 4.5kg and 28cm).
