Must-Have Products in your Puppy ToolKit

Bringing your new puppy home is one of life's joys! Puppy-proofing your home and garden and a well-planned first 24 hours will give your furry bundle the best head start and make your dreams of the perfect family dog come true.

We recommend you draft a shopping list of all essential supplies a few weeks ahead to ensure you have plenty of time to source items that will last at the best possible price.

#1. Bowls for Food & Water

You will need two solid, indestructible bowls for both food and water. The water bowl should be large and hard to tip over for a boisterous puppy.

Why do dogs feel like eating has to be a race? We have no idea, but we found some products that can help. Featuring meal-lengthening ridges and mazes, the mini Fun Feeders™ from Outward Hound will keep your pup engaged for up to 10 times longer at chow time.

This helps your furry friend eat at a fun, healthy pace and prevents serious issues like canine bloat, regurgitation and canine obesity.

Available in 3 unique colors and designs, these slow feeders also feature a slip-resistant base to prevent sliding and food spillage.

RRP: $22.95 from luckypet.com.au

The Torus Water Bowl has a concealed reservoir which automatically dispenses fresh water while your dog drinks.

Perfect for car travel, water is sealed in the internal reservoir so it won't spill and the bowl low profile also makes it exceptionally stable.

If your tap water is not suitable for you to drink, then your puppy should not be allowed to drink it either.

RRP: $74.99 (1L bowl) from www.budgetpetproducts.com.au

#2. A Cosy Dog Bed

Bringing home a new puppy is exciting but it can lead to sleepless nights as your pup learns to settle on its own, away from its litter mates and mum. The best dog bed for a puppy is a design that allows him to snuggle into the bed.

The Fuzzyard Kaleidoscope reversible pet bed is filled with their famous feather-soft filling and is fully machine washable.

With the beautiful deep grey velour on the inside and the vibrant orange, cerise and grey on the outside, this bed is sure to suit any interior styling.
Available in Small/Medium.

RRP: from $59.95 at petsonthepark.com.au

#3. Feeding your Puppy

Regarding food, ask the breeder what your puppy has been fed and follow that diet exactly: it needs to be identical to what the puppy has been used to for the first few weeks. Then, you can gradually wean your puppy onto the diet of your choice.

It is essential that as young dogs grow, they receive adequate calcium intake to build strong bones and assist in skeletal formation to support their weight and this is particularly important in larger breeds as they grow older.

Lactose is the component in milk which many dogs can't digest and consequently gives them stomach problems.

Pets Own Puppy Milk is lactose-free and has been formulated with the specific needs of puppies of all sizes and breeds in mind. Containing high levels of essential calcium, protein and other vitamins and minerals it is a nutritional food source suitable for new born and growing young puppies up to 12 months.

RRP: $5.79  (1L) from www.habitatpets.com.au

RRP: $17.50–$22.50 from dogue.com.au

#6. Puppy Toys

Your puppy will quickly get bored with just one chew toy so we advise having at least five and you can rotate which ones your puppy gets to use each day. Please ensure that these toys are tough and can be safely left with your dog if you’re away during the day.

If your dog loves having their own friend to snuggle with, but also a bit of rough-and-tumble play time, the Huggle Hounds Knottie is the perfect toy!

Featuring a soft corduroy outer and heavy duty stitching, Knotties are gentle enough to be thrown around without damaging walls or valuables, during indoor playtime. Multiple squeakers and knotted limbs to chew will keep your buddy engaged and in love with this gorgeous toy.

Available in a range of fun and colourful characters, including the popular Orange Moose. Fully machine washable, Knotties are made to withstand a boisterous puppy and will be enjoyed by your buddy at any life stage!

RRP: $18.99 from PETstock.com.au

The Kong Puppy is recommended worldwide by vets and dog trainers. This toy is made from softer rubber suitable for puppies.

The Puppy Kong is ideal for stuffing with treats, paste or even frozen liquids during warmer weather. It has a unique shape causing it to bounce unpredictably when thrown and is perfect for extended chew sessions.

It comes in 3 sizes (Small to Large to suit puppies up to 30kg)

RRP: from $9.95 from www.petcircle.com.au

#7. Puppy Shampoo & Brush

You can bath your new puppy even if he’s not smelly. It is a good idea to get puppies used to gentle bathing and being touched (especially on their paws which will make nail clipping easier). You will need to buy a dog shampoo with a gentle formula and a long lasting brush unless you prefer taking your pooch to the local grooming salon!

FURminator My FURst Waterless Puppy Shampoo is a gentle formula for frequent use to quickly clean the coat and reduce odours between baths. It is suitable for topical use on dogs over 6 weeks old.

This puppy shampoo c
ontains no parabens, artificial colours or chemical dyes and is enriched with Kava Extract and Aloe Vera. This blend of natural ingredients is safe and gentle to use on puppy’s delicate skin. The non-drying formula leaves your puppy smelling fresh and clean.

RRP: $10.95 (251ml) from www.vetnpetdirect.com.au

Kong Zoom Grooms are the "World's Best" dog grooming brushes! Their gentle rubber fingers reach through your pet's fur to make friendly contact with the skin without yanking or pulling.

This "groomassage" action removes loose hair like a magnet, stimulates capillaries and natural oil production for healthy skin and coats. The brush empties easily with a flick and is suitable for all dogs. It comes in two colours: Boysenberry and Raspberry.

RRP: $17.51 from vetproductsdirect.com

#8. Toilet Training

A crate can cut housebreaking time in half by keeping puppy from eliminating in one end and sleeping in the other. When choosing a crate or carrier, make sure that your pup can stand up, lie down, turn around, and stretch inside. Though dogs prefer to have a den-like space, they also need room to feel comfortable. These also come useful when you hit the road: trips to the vet, holidays or if you decide to take up a dog sport.

The MidWest Contour Double Door Dog Crates are great for active dogs as their unique door design has an anti-burst locking system. They fold easily, include carrying handles and are sturdy enough to contain an active pet.
The free divider panel allows you to adjust the size of the living area, so your crate adapts to the size of your dog as he grows.

RRP: from $89.00 at www.readypetgo.com.au

Potty Plant has recently launched in Australia and is making toilet training a breeze for dog owners who live in apartments.

Potty Plant works with nature bringing real grass into apartment living. The 100% real grass roots absorb the pee before it has a chance to decompose and smell. It also makes a stylish addition to your balcony or home: it comes in sleek white, which makes for a stunning contrast against the green grass.

RRP: $230 from pottyplant.com.au

#9. Cleaning

When you bring a new puppy into your home, chances are he or she will not be house-trained. They may also be a little stressed during the first few days as they adjust to their new routine. Some are quick learners and others less so... and you're bound to
encounter a few accidental messes and spills.

X-Out Spot Check is a pet stain eliminator, that works safely and effectively to remove both new and old stains from carpet areas, rugs, upholstery etc. without damaging the colour or texture of fabrics.

It uses a water-based formula which contains no harsh chemicals and is biodegradable.

If you can't keep your eyes on your new puppy all the time during toilet training, you will need one of these...

RRP: $29.35 (500ml) from cleanergreener.com.au

#10. Vaccinations & Worming Products

Some canine diseases are very serious and can be fatal even with treatment. To prevent your dog from getting these diseases regular vaccination is recommended.

At 6-8 weeks of age puppies should receive their first vaccination; this is temporary and needs to be followed up with another one at 12 weeks. After the 12 week vaccination you can safely take your puppy out in public areas.

To get a dose of heartwormer or allwormer that is right for your puppy, you will need to weigh him or her first. Puppies grow quickly (especially large breeds) during the first 6 months so buy small packs at first!

If you’ve never owned a dog previously, ask your vet for advice as to what product to use and when to administer.

#11. Dog Coat or Dog Jumper

If you’re getting your new puppy (especially one with short hair or a toy breed) during the colder months, he will get cold very easily.

Your puppy will enjoy wearing a dog coat or a jumper during your walks in colder weather. Just watch out that it doesn’t get chewed off during the teething phase!

#12. Dog Appeasing Pheromone

Formally known as DAP, Adaptil is a synthetic copy of the natural canine appeasing pheromome proven to help support dogs in a range of stressful situations (e.g. storm phobia).

Adaptil is also known to help puppies settle in a new home and to have significant positive effects on puppy socialisation. Fitting a collar from 6-16 weeks helps puppies develop into confident, well-behaved adult dogs and significantly reduces the likelihood of anxiety-related conditions developing later in life.

When the Adaptil collar is in snug contact with the dog’s skin, the dog’s body temperature warms the collar and encourages the diffusion of pheromones into the local environment. It
should last up to 4 weeks.

RRP: from $69.95 (45cm) at vetnpetdirect.com.au

#13. Council Registration

Don’t forget that most councils will require registration by 12 weeks of age. Check with your council and ask if they have a short-term registration for puppies (the cost goes down after desexing your dog).

#14. Pet Insurance & Pet ID Tag

You don’t have to purchase pet insurance for your puppy but unless you have a dedicated saving account, it is probably a good idea as vet bills can quickly run in the thousands for accidents or sudden illnesses. When you sign up, insurers will require a complete vet check-up for full cover and the sooner you join, the more likely you are to avoid any exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

A number of pet insurers will also give you a free pet ID Tag.
If not, there are plenty of funky options available to match your pup's name and personality.

Rogz bring you fuss-free dog tag engraving from the comfort of your computer chair!

They have a fabulous selection of designs and colours to choose from.
These highly durable metal tags are made to last and tags come in two sizes.

Purchase your prepaid ID Scratch Card from pet stores or vets and then simply log onto the Rogz site. Just follow the instructions
and your pup's new engraved ID Tag will arrive in 1 to 7 working days!

RRP: from $11.49 (Small) and $13.49 (Large)

#15. Puppy Pre-School

Don’t forget to book a spot at your local Puppy Pre-School.

For his own safety, your puppy needs to be socialised from an early age and should respond well to basic commands (like stay).

It is most important that your puppy's first experiences with other dogs away from the safety of its mother, are amicable. Ring and secure your place well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Finally, if you have young children please teach them not to overwhelm the puppy on his first day and let him settle in before showing him off to family, friends and the entire neighbourhood!

Make sure you enjoy these first few months with your new puppy and don't forget to take loads of pictures as they grow up way too quickly!
