Is Your Dog Secretly Your Travel Agent? New Study Confirms Aussie Pups are Calling the ShotsFrom "vet-guilt" to "car-cleaning-anxiety," research shows 62% of Aussie owners now put their pet's needs above their own family's.
If you’ve ever cancelled brunch because your Border Collie gave you "the eyes," or spent your Saturday detailing dog hair out of your upholstery, you aren’t alone. You’re the new Australian norm.
New research from Omoda Jaecoo Australia has confirmed what we’ve long suspected: the "Family Dog" has been promoted to "Chief Decision Maker." A staggering 75% of Aussie pet owners admit their furry companions now dictate their daily schedules, from where they drink their coffee to how they spend their weekends.
The "Paw-riority" Shift
The study highlights a massive shift in the household hierarchy. Gone are the days of the backyard dog; 62% of owners now say their pet’s needs are equal to, or take priority over, their own or their family’s.
This "Pup-first" mentality is hitting our hip pockets and calendars too:
- 85% of us let our dogs influence our spending, with pet food (33%), vet bills (22%), and toys (19%) ranking as our top expenses.
- Life Events: Pets are now the primary influence on our travel plans (28%), weekend plans (24%), and even social plans with friends and family (20%).
- Cleaning Anxiety: We are spending nearly double on car detailing (21%) than we are on actual dog walkers or day care (11%).
- The FOMO Factor: 72% of dog owners admit they’ve avoided taking their dog in their own or a friend’s car simply because they were worried about dirt or damage.
"We’re seeing a 'Great Aussie Pet Integration'," says Dr. Will Maginness, veterinarian and animal wellbeing advocate.

"Pets aren't just tagging along; they are commuters. Features like antibacterial, easy-clean seats and advanced climate control aren't just luxuries anymore—they’re essentials for a stress-free life with a dog."
For media personality Evelyn Ellis, her sausage dogs, Mustard and Pickles, are the ultimate veto-voters. "If it’s not dog-friendly, it’s probably not happening," she says. "Comfort for them is non-negotiable. I need a cabin that can handle real life—and real mud."
