Movie magic under the stars: iconic Moonlight Cinema returns for a blockbuster summer

There is no better place for audiences to get their movie fix this summer than under the starry night sky. Moonlight Cinema is back with a stellar line-up of some of 2024’s best releases. Moonlight sessions will run until March 2025 (dates and locations available below) across five Australian locations.

Moonlight Cinema brings the ultimate outdoor cinema experience to some of Australia’s most beautiful locations. Audiences can enjoy their favourite films at Adelaide’s Botanic Park, Brisbane’s Roma St Parklands, Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens, Perth’s Kings Park & Botanic Garden and Sydney’s Centennial Parklands.

While enjoying these picturesque parks, attendees might like to indulge in Singapore Airline’s Gold Grass, for waiter service and prime views. Across Australia, viewers will also have a chance to enjoy the Mount Franklin Lightly Sparkling Platinum experiences, which include delicious and refreshing Mount Franklin Lightly Sparkling to experience, a food package and personal waiter service direct to deluxe double bean bags.

Moviegoers will be treated to a combination of classics and this year’s box office smashes. 2024 releases include Wicked, Gladiator II, Heretic, Challengers, It Ends with Us, Deadpool and Wolverine, The Fall Guy, The Substance, Twisters and Kneecap.

Fans of superstar performer Robbie Williams can catch his biopic Better Man, on its Boxing Day release. Iconic films Mean Girls (2004) and Barbie are also featured in the line-up.

Families can also enjoy screenings of Inside Out 2 and a special preview screening of Paddington in Peru.

A Week of Romance: Your favourite romance titles under the stars.

  • Notting Hill – 11th February (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide). Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant shine in this charming tale of an ordinary bookseller and a superstar actress finding love in London’s quaint Notting Hill neighbourhood.
  • Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (Preview Screening) – 12th February (National). Renée Zellweger returns as the iconic Bridget Jones, as she engages with the dating scene four years after the death of her husband.
  • How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003) – 13th February (National). Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey bring sparkling chemistry to this hilarious rom-com about a journalist and an ad exec caught in a game of love and deception.
  • 10 Things I Hate About You – 14th February (National). A modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, this beloved classic stars Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, packed with wit, romance, and unforgettable moments.
  • The Notebook – 15th February (National). The ultimate love story starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. Hoping to stir her fast-fading memories, an old man reads a love story to a woman that tells of two young lovers in the 1940s who are separated by the girl’s wealthy parents.
  • We Live in Time – 5th & 16th February (National), 27th February (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide). A tender romance starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, exploring the complexities of love and loss through a beautifully woven narrative.

  • Wicked: Sing-Along – 8th February (National). Get ready to belt out Defying Gravity! Revisit the untold story of the witches of Oz in this interactive singalong version of the film.
  • Wicked – 20th February (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth). The dazzling adaptation of the Broadway musical, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, telling the untold story of the witches of Oz.
  • Mufasa: The Lion King – 1st February (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide), 2nd February (Brisbane, Perth), 18th & 28th February (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide). An epic prequel to The Lion King, exploring the rise of Mufasa, voiced by Aaron Pierre, and his journey to becoming king of the Pride Lands.

  • Conclave – 6th February (National). A tense thriller set in the Vatican, starring Ralph Fiennes. The film follows the secretive process of electing a new Pope, unravelling political intrigue and hidden agendas.
  • Sonic 3 – 1st February (Brisbane, Perth). The next instalment in the Sonic franchise, starring Ben Schwartz, as Sonic and his friends face a new nemesis threatening their world.
  • Gladiator II – 19th February (Perth). The epic sequel to Gladiator, starring Paul Mescal. The story picks up years after Maximus' death, exploring the power struggles of the Roman Empire.
  • September 5 – 21st February (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth). During the 1972 Munich Olympics, an American sports broadcasting crew finds itself thrust into covering the hostage crisis involving Israeli athletes.
  • A Complete Unknown – 22nd February (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth). A biographical drama exploring the life of Bob Dylan, starring Timothée Chalamet. The electric true story behind the rise of one of the most iconic singer-songwriters in history.

  • Widow Clicquot – 2nd February (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide). Based on the true story behind the Veuve Clicquot champagne family in the late 18th century. After her husband's untimely death, Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot flouts convention to revolutionise the champagne industry and become one of the world’s first great entrepreneurs.
  • The Last Showgirl - 19th February (Sydney, Melbourne). After a successful thirty-year run as the face of a Las Vegas floor show, Shelley must figure out what comes next when the show is cancelled. Starring Pamela Anderson, Dave Bautista, Jamie Lee Curtis, Billie Lourd, Kiernan Shipka and Brenda Song.
  • Spit – 26th February (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth). Spit (David Wenham) finds himself locked up in an immigration detention centre upon his return to Australia. With old enemies on his tail and a target on his back, he navigates a series of comedic misadventures, sharing with his fellow detainees the meaning of mateship and what it is to be truly Australian.

 

Retro Titles: It wouldn’t be Moonlight Cinema without nostalgic, feel-good flicks this season.

  • Devil Wears Prada – 4th February (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide). Relive the iconic film starring Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt.
  • The Parent Trap – 7th February (National). This beloved family comedy stars Lindsay Lohan as identical twins scheming to reunite their divorced parents in this heart-warming and hilarious classic.
  • Twilight – 9th February (Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide). Relive your vampire phase and get swept up in this noughties pop culture phenomenon, starring Kristin Stewart and Robert Pattinson. 
  • She’s the Man (2006) – 25th February (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth). Amanda Bynes stars in this hilarious romantic comedy adapted from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.
