International Dog Day at Retford Park - August 26

Calling all dogs, hounds, pups, mutts, doggos and pooches to celebrate
International Dog Day on August 26 with their humans in beautiful surrounds at historic Retford Park.

James Oswald Fairfax AC, the great-great-grandson of newspaper proprietor John Fairfax, owned over 13 dogs throughout his 83 years, including a Chihuahua, Labradors and German Shorthaired Pointers. Later in life, a family member gave Fairfax a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Paloma.

This would be the start of many Greek god-inspired ‘Ridgies’ to enjoy life on the estate.

James Fairfax’s love of dogs is evident everywhere at Retford Park, from the stone dogs keeping guard at the front of the house, to paintings and photographs of his dogs in the house, and the special place in the grounds where his dogs are buried, along with his ashes because he wanted to be buried with his beloved dogs. Read more about Retford Park’s canine connection here.

In celebration of James’ adoration of his dogs, and in alignment with International Dog Day, National Trust NSW invite you and your furry friend to the festivities at Retford Park.

Take a guided tour through the stunning gardens, check out the stick library, browse doggie clothing from Khris’s Dog Coats and yummy dog treats by Pupcakes and Treats, have your pet’s pawtrait taken at The Bark Room’s pop up studio, and find the perfect dog lover’s gift in the National Trust shop.
