Channel 10's Pooches at Play, created and hosted by Lara Shannon, is back for a seventh series at a time many pet parents are struggling with pets adopted during the pandemic.
Shannon, who is a certified dog trainer/behaviourist, pet food nutritionist and Author of Eat, Play, Love (your dog) and World of Dogs, created Pooches at Play after recognising “there was a gap in the market where Australian pet owners could access much needed pet behaviour, health, grooming and other lifestyle advice in an easy to understand and entertaining format, all from the comfort of their own home”.
With a substantial boom in pet ownership across Australia - an estimated 69% of households now own a pet, led by a surge in dog ownership with over a million additional dogs being brought into Australian households since 2019*, Shannon says there has never been more demand for information to help struggling dog owners deal with the behavioural changes and challenges that come with a return to life post-pandemic.
To help, the weekly episode format of Pooches at Play includes expert tips and advice covering dog training and behaviour, grooming, food and nutrition, breed profiles and pet-friendly lifestyles, health advice with Veterinarian Dr Melissa Meehan, as well as profiling the community and charity initiatives supported by PETstock’s Petspiration Foundation, in an effort to help recognise and promote the important human animal bond that has got many people through the past two years.
This series will also see Lara visiting the Top End to learn more about the health care challenges for dogs in remote and regional indigenous communities across Australia, including the deadly tick-borne disease ehrlichiosis that was first identified in Australia late 2020 and which has had a devastating impact on both the dogs and the local communities in these areas.
According to Shannon, “the primary purpose of Pooches at Play is to provide trustworthy, expert information and advice, sharing our collective knowledge with pet parents to enhance their bond with, and the health and wellbeing of, their pets”. We also hope to raise awareness of the challenges facing many pet guardians across Australia.
Most importantly Shannon says, “The information pet owners receive through Pooches at Play on all of our platforms can genuinely help their pets to live longer and happier lives, and make their own lives easier, which is something our viewers and followers definitely recognise and appreciate – and need more than ever at this time.”
Pooches at Play Series 7 premieres on Channel 10 and 10Play on Saturday June 25 at 2pm and encores Sundays on 10BOLD at 4pm for 8-weeks.
Pooches at Play is a co-produced by The Rusty Cage.
