Olly's Box Barkday Box - Review

Celebrating your 8th birthday should be a joyous occasion even if your hoomum is grumpy because she was unable to organise new birthday props or have her favourite pooch cake delivered following our protracted Sydney lockdown. First world problems, right?

Thank Dog, the pawsome team at Olly’s Box - one of Australia’s original dog subscription boxes - came to the rescue sending us a Barkday Box for our twins Aramis and Porthos so they could still celebrate in style!

How does the Olly’s Box subscription dog box work?

Brisbane-based Olly’s Box is one of the first dog subscription boxes we have ever come across. Their boxes containing a mix of exciting toys, yummy treats and handy accessories are enjoyed by thousands of dogs and their pawrents to ensure fun goodies are being delivered straight to their front door!

What we did not realise until now is that they also offer one-off boxes for special occasions like their Barkday Box to celebrate your dog’s birthday or gotcha' day and their Puppy Box, designed to help your new puppy learn and grow.

We do love the fact that this option allows you to trial their box service without having to commit upfront to a 3-month or 6-month contract, though expect to be paying a bit more than their regular subscribers.

However, this option is at the lower end of what you’d expect to pay these days for a dog subscription box that includes a good selection of dog toys, treats and/or accessories.

To get started, you simply need to provide some basic details like your dog’s name, gender, birthday, your email address etc.

Then comes the customisation which covers your dog’s size – is your pupper big and bold or small and cute? Personally, we think our doggos are both big AND cute but that option wasn’t available…

You can choose from treats only or toys only or a mix of both (our choice) and make limited special requests (for instance gluten-free if your dog suffers from food allergies).

Your box will be delivered free of charge across Australia within days unless you need it urgently and are happy to pay an extra $6.95 for the express delivery option.

We liked the fact that we could specify Australian brands to be prioritised in our mix and also to include tough toys as both our Malinois are extreme chewers!

What was in our twins' Barkday Box?

We took turns with each of our dogs to let them have their own "unboxing" experience!

Our dogs' Barkday Box included 6 separate items:

✔️ Bush Sticks (Australian Kangaroo & Venison) dog treats from All Barks. Our dogs are big fans of this range of natural treats and as kangaroo is their favourite protein, this was the perfect choice!

✔️ Vetalogica Naturals dog food (Grain-Free Salmon sample). One of the better choices of Australian-made dry dog food and a brand we have reviewed with our kitten Arya previously. Nowadays, we use kibble samples via a treat dispenser for mental stimulation as sample packs are too small to constitute a meal for a 30kg dog.

With dog dental care month coming up, we liked the selection of tough dog toys included in our Barkday Box:

✔️ JW Pet Toys Cyberbone made with durable natural rubber. We try to avoid all toys made in China these days but it is certified non-toxic and looks like a reasonable option to help clean your dogs' teeth. However, always supervise your pet whilst playing and remove immediately if it becomes damaged.

✔️ Allpet Ruff Play ring toy, also made in China... Made from durable rubber, it was immediately the most popular toy of the day because of its squeaker action! Even big dogs like squeakers...

✔️ GiGwi Monster Rope from their Squeak series. Despite being medium size (the large probably would not fit into Olly's Box!) this fun-looking plush rope tug toy with a squeaker would be welcome at any Halloween-themed dog party.

✔️ Our bonus dog accessory was a FITDOG Poop Bag Dispenser with a small roll of 10 dog waste bags included.

You can never have too many of these and the carabiner makes it easy to clip to a belt or a walking pouch for your dog walks so no more excuses not to pick up after your dogs!

Our box also included a standard Yappy Barkday card and a $100 voucher to use with Naked Wines.

What did we like about the Olly's Box Barkday Box?

Your one-off box will be dispatched within hours after you sign up and we found the tracking advice to be reliable.

The customer service was also very good (we dealt with Olly's Box owner / founder directly) and we were happy with the value for money provided by our box (6 items including free shipping interstate for only $60.00).

With so many of us still locked up in our homes this month, ordering an Olly's Box will provide hours of fun for your dog and also help brighten up your day! Why not try one even if you don't have a dog birthday coming up?
