2019 Werriwa Wiener Dash Bungendore - Jan 27

Have you ever been to a Dachshund race? If not, you really don’t know what you’re missing!

They’re not fierce competitors but they are certainly fun to watch. To look at a Dachshund, you wouldn’t think it would make a very good racer. They are compact and very low to the ground, with short legs. But just like some people who don’t know that they are smaller, these dogs give it their all. Well some of them do! Others stand around sniffing each other and visiting, or running off into the field.

In 2016, the Bungendore Show hosted the inaugural Werriwa Wiener Dash, the first (to our knowledge at least) Dachshund Race in the Capital Region, and it was a roaring success with over 120 dachies and their parents in attendance. People came from across Australia to see these little power packs run.

In 2017 the Bungendore Show set the ‘World Record’ for the most number of Dachshunds in one place with 154 dachshunds attending. In March 2018 this record was broken in Cornwall, UK when 601 long dogs gathered for a beach walk.

In 2019 the organisers are aiming for at least 602 dogs to come along to be counted. To assist in reaching this number DOGUE Pet Boutique has agreed to donate $1 for every Dachshund to Storybook Farm to assist them in the rehabilitation of and care for special needs animals.

This year there will be eight races in the morning and eight races in the afternoon (
all self-contained competitions) with each session culminating in the presentation of the trophies for the Layla Cup (morning session) and Peanut Gift (afternoon session). Competitors are allowed to enter both sessions but will require a separate entry ticket for each.
There's also the Para-Wiener Dash for those special Dachshunds who are elderly or living with a disability that preclude them from otherwise running as well as the popular Puppy race (6 months and under).
The Dapper Dachshund is always a highlight of the day and allows those Dachshunds with a passion for fashion to strut their stuff on the Bungendore Show 'dog walk'. As with other Fashion on the Fields events, competition is strong with everyone vying for the title.

Entry to all races and the Dapper Dachshund is $2.50 per event with all funds raised going to Dachshund Rescue Australia. The Bungendore Show is also donating a percentage of the sale of all pre-purchased Show admission tickets by dachshund owners to Dachshund Rescue Australia so it is important that you purchase your gate tickets online when registering for the Dash. Entry details are on the tickets page here.

Even if you don’t have a Dachshund, come along to watch the races, learn more about the breed and pat a Wiener.
The Werriwa Wiener Dash would like to thank My Dachshund Online and Peter Alexander for kindly donating prizes for this event.
