Barc for Pets - Adventures for Sydney dogs

Dogs on Sydney’s Northern Beaches are panting with excitement – and exhaustion – thanks to Dog Adventures, a new service by Barc for Pets in Newport.

Susan Elliott's Border Collie Indie recently sampled these doggie adventures and she had such a terrific time she simply had to tell all her Sydney furry pals about it!

A walk in the park – it’s not!

Bec and Marc (thus the business name Barc!) love dogs and know how much they enjoy adventure as much as humans.

No doggie bag required as everything is provided for a day of swimming, cross-country running, bush-walking, rock-hopping, hiking, exploring and sniffing out new territories.

The day (or half day) of Doggie Adventure starts at your place – when Bec and Marc pick up your pooch in their Hilux Dual cab. And, as any kid (or adult!) will tell you, riding in the back of a ute is the best fun!

Securely tethered, of course, the dogs love it –and for pups new to the experience there’s a crate in the tray. Either way – it’s snouts to the breeze to their surprise destination.

“Wherever we go, it’s all about high intensity agility, with interval training up and down hills, long distance hiking, swimming, beach exploring and lots of running,” says Bec.

Bec is the daughter of Port Macquarie Border Collie breeder Kim Sheean at Avelon Farm and came up with the idea of Dog Adventures while watching her Mum’s six collies exhaust themselves on the farm.

“I dreamed that city dogs could have the same exciting experiences in the outdoors, to add adventure to their daily exercise and for them to be really stimulated and challenged,” says Bec. Especially for working dogs and other high-energy breeds - a walk around the block or even an hour at the local dog park often isn’t enough for them.”

So where could your dogs go on an adventure?

Well, your Dog Adventure could start with a lap of Narrabeen Lagoon Trail – a great warm up for a hike along some of the other local tracks - where the leashes come off and the challenges begin!

Dogs dash along paths covered in canopies of beautiful native bush to rock platforms with stunning views, gullies and waterfalls – all great spots for a photo opportunity - and yes, you get texts with photos of your dog's adventures!

They’re all great spots for a rest and meal break.
An organic lunch is included and could be pasta or rice and vegetables with chicken or beef – washed down with a cup of FurFresh bone broth and lots of fresh water.

“I cook up the meals the night before using ingredients from my local organic grocer in Mona Vale,” says Bec. “If there are any allergies, we can cater for that too.”

There are lots and lots of stairs – and how GOOD is the sea breeze ruffling the fur when you get to the top!

Adventuring to other parts of Sydney include destinations such as the beautiful Bidjigal Reserve in the Hills Shire, the Bondi to Bronte walk in the Eastern Suburbs and the Clovelly to Maroubra path – finishing with a swim at Sirius Cove in Mosman or Rowland Reserve in Bayview on the way home.

And for a really big beach day – Bec and Marc often head out of town to the dog-friendly beaches of the Central Coast where sun, sand and water make for lots of smiling muzzles.

All adventures cover a minimum of 12 kilometres and you’ll know exactly how far, as adventurers are all accessorised with a Pet Activity Tracker counting every step of their big day out.

“We don’t want any dog missing out on the fun so we’ve got adventures for small and elderly dogs as well,” says Marc.

“This could be a leisurely stroll in the outdoors, with a picnic and finishing with another low pace stroll around flat surfaced gardens.”
