Common Woof Games Melbourne - May 4 to 6

The Dog Lovers Show has announced the first ever Common Woof Games in Melbourne from May 4 – 6, as part of their annual Show program.

Taking place at the stunning Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton, the Games will see a plethora of pooches from four corners of the globe competing in 11 popular fusion dog sports including: hurdles, discus throw, high jump, vaulting, barrel racing, basketball, soccer, weight pull, javelin dodge and loads more.

The Games will commence with a spectacular Opening Ceremony Extravaganza, hosted by Dr Katrina WarrenKelly Gill and the WonderdogsFarmer Dave Graham will then present the victorious canines with their medals as part of the Official Closing Ceremony in the Royal Canin Arena at the end of each day.

In another exciting first, Australian Working Dog Rescue International (AWDRI) is transforming the Royal Exhibition Building outdoor forecourt into a giant sheepdog herding zone for the inaugural Dog Lovers Show - Sheepdog Speed Trials

Recreating farm paddock conditions, these incredible rescue dogs will take turns at speed herding sheep with their handler and heats will run anywhere from two to ten minutes. Speed herding is a tactic used to protect sheep in emergencies, with an emphasis on low-stress stock handling, getting the job done as quickly as possible to keep animals safe.

The outdoor forecourt will also play host to the Common Woof Games pool and aquatic division with Black Hawk presenting the splash-tastic crowd favourite, DockDogs. Pooches of all shapes, sizes and abilities will take part in various Big Air, Rapid Relay, Speed Retrieve, Extreme Vertical and Duelling Dogs heats, as crowds cheer on their favourite furry athlete in the splash-zone (BYO raincoat and brolly!).

As if cheering on 4-legged champions wasn’t enough, visitors will also hear free educational talks from some popular celebrities on the all new Pet Circle Stage. Catch Dr. Harry Cooper sharing insights on ‘Solving the most common dog health problems’ and ‘how to choose the right dog for your lifestyle’ as well as Dr Katrina Warren and Kelly Gill showing ‘easy tricks you can teach your dog at home’ and ‘how to give your dog a happy and enriched life’.

The Pet Circle veterinary team will take to the stage to bust common dog myths, while Dr Kate Mornement from Pets Behaving Badly will help solve common dog behaviour problems. Visitors will even get the chance to meet ‘Toto’ from the Wizard of Oz Musical along with film and TV animal trainer Luke Hura.

The Show is owned and organised by Event Management International, who have always been dedicated to raising awareness for local shelters and helping to rehome displaced dogs. In 2018 this pledge has stepped up a notch with a doubling in the size of the zone and over 50 rescue groups being provided free space to exhibit.

TV Star Andrew Morley is presenting a Guide to Dog Adoption on the Pet Circle Stage, with some help from fellow celebrities Ryan Anderson (Aussie Dog Guy and RSPCA Inspector) and Neighbours co-star and animal adopter Takaya Honda.

The star-studded line up continues with DJ Havana Brown headlining the Furbo Insta-Pooch Zone with her beloved (and internet-famous) Yorkie, Ba*Bing. Don’t miss Melbourne’s most in-demand canines as they take to the red carpet, snap selfies with adoring fans and give their paw-tographs all weekend including crowd favourites: Nigella the Pug, Bentley the Newfoundland, Sumo & Cocopops and Doxie duo Maluka & Avalon.

Dog devotees will delight in the diverse range of hounds at the Show this year, with the biggest variety of breeds ever. In addition to the ever-popular Chow Chows, Dalmatians, Frenchies, Great Danes, Schnauzers, Poodles and more, there is a whole new feature titled ‘The Breeds Collective’, where dozens of new breeds who have never been at the Dog Lovers Show before will take turns meeting visitors. Some of these unique breeds include the Saluki, Clumber Spaniel, Belgian Shepherd and the Briard.

There is ample opportunity to get hands on in the Pat-A-Pooch Zone, where young and the young at heart can lounge on beanbags and meet breeds of all shapes and sizes, including puppies, rescue dogs, service and therapy dogs

It’s also the best chance all year to stock up on all the latest and greatest products to spoil your pooch with over 250 exhibitors from organic treats to luxury bedding, artistic paw-traits to haute couture fashion!

The Dog Lovers Show is also delighted to announce Porsche as their official vehicle partner.
