This World Environment Day (June 5), we'd like to introduce you to Kelpy Bone, a small pet business based in Mollymook, NSW.
But while they may be small, they’re on a mighty mission: to break up with harmful plastics and their toxins for good.
Founded by environmental scientist, proud dog mum and activist Sara Gibson, Kelpy Bone was borne out of a simple but urgent need: to protect our pups from toxic plastic. Sara runs the business alongside her full-time role in sustainability consulting, and with a little help from her dogs Cisco and Lenny — from a van on a dairy farm.
After diving deep into the research, Sara discovered just how dangerous plastic can be for dogs. Studies show that chewing or ingesting plastic can lead to cancer, liver disease, obesity, hormone imbalances, and more.
Frustrated by the lack of safe, natural alternatives to the plastic bones on pet store shelves — and tired of her vet knocking back every option she brought home. Sara decided to take matters into her own hands. She set out to build a completely plastic-free compostable dog toy company from scratch.
That’s how Kelpy Bone came to life — a durable dog toy made from 100% seaweed, using world-class material innovation from Notpla. After spotting Notpla’s seaweed-based replacement for an ice cream scoop, Sara reached out.
Kelpy Bone stands out for its impressive commitment to sustainability. Their unique bones are made with three types of seaweed, which sequester carbon 20 times more effectively than land forests, significantly lowering emissions. Nearly a year and a half later, Kelpy Bone was born.
Perfect for enrichment, Kelpy Bone gives dogs the joy of chewing (and the happy hormones that come with it) — without the risk of splintering or damaging their teeth.

It’s tough enough to last serious chewers (we’re looking at you, Staffies!) up to two hours, and more moderate chewers anywhere from a few days to a week.
Beyond being safe and plastic-free, seaweed is also a powerful superfood for dogs. It’s packed with essential amino acids that support muscle and skin health, and Omega-3s that fight inflammation. As Sara’s vet says, “Seaweed is like a punnet of blueberries for your dog.”
Not only is Kelpy Bone safe for your dogs' health, it is better for the planet too. Their bones completely plastic-free, that means PLA, PVC or phthalates that you see in conventional bioplastics. That means if your pup leaves their Kelpy Bone in the backyard it will just decay like an apple core would and return back to the earth - in fact, it’s a fantastic fertiliser for the garden.

All packaging and the bones themselves are 100% compostable and recyclable. Kelpy Bone also actively measures and reduces its business emissions, demonstrating a holistic approach to environmental responsibility.
They have just launched their first product but are already working on a new product line that we can’t wait to share with you!
