Sandra Abade, co-founder of Dog Friendly Co., says her inspiration comes from her Australian Bulldog, Carlos, whose needs sparked her journey into pet product design. Carlos is a key member of the team, influencing many of the designs.
Sandra shared with us her inspiration behind this latest range as well as some exciting new product launches on the horizon.
What is the design process - how do you select materials and specific features that make your walk range stand out?
"When selecting materials, we prioritise safety, function, and durability. At the same time we put a lot of emphasis in making sure our designs such as our personalised Harnesses are modern and stylish.
Achieving this without compromising on safety and functionality while still being super comfortable for dogs is where the magic happens!"
What was the key driver behind this new colourway expansion?
"We launched a Neutrals limited edition Walk range last year. It sold out within the week which validated the demand for this colour range.

Since then, we have received messages from customers on a daily basis asking if they will return.
We wanted to bring back the favourites as well as introduce some new colours such as Burgundy and Khaki which are hot this season!
Given the recent press on large retailers copying Dog Friendly Co products, can you please provide some context on how this has impacted your business?
Any plans for the future you’d like to share with our audience?
We are currently working on a winter collection of Dog Hoodies that are inspired by the demand of harness neutrals and we are designing an innovative Dog Tag that will enhance the way lost pets are reunited with their owners.
Given the recent press on large retailers copying Dog Friendly Co products, can you please provide some context on how this has impacted your business?
For us, the key message we wanted to convey was safety.
We didn’t want our brand to be confused with lower-quality imitations. The pet industry is not heavily regulated, and our biggest concern is large retailers release knock-off products that lack durability.
A poorly made harness clip can lead to serious consequences, and unfortunately, there’s often no accountability for these issues. We have also had customers contact us to complain about product quality and their experience thinking they bought from us when it was actually a "dupe" product…
What drives your commitment to original designs and high quality products?
"We are dog lovers and dog owners, safety is our top priority, especially when it comes to design. We carefully research every detail, down to the threads we use, to ensure they are suitable for pets.

Our designs start with large dogs to ensure durability is at the forefront of everything we create.
All of our products are originally designed by our in-house team, starting with a sketch. We go through months of trials and revisions, testing different looks, before launching anything to ensure we stay innovative and maintain the highest quality."
Any plans for the future you’d like to share with our audience?
Our Dog Leash range has greatly expanded to suit the needs of customers and we plan to do the same with collars. Just this month we launched a new range of Dog Beds called the Chill Pill Memory Foam Dog Bed that we believe will impact the lives of dogs just as much as our walk range has.
