Celebrated each year on October 1st, National Black Dog Day seeks encourage the adoption of black dogs.National Black Dog Day is a day dedicated to celebrating darker coloured dogs and also addressing the misconceptions that often make them less popular than their more colourful companions.
National Black Dog Day started in 2011 to encourage the adoption of black dogs across all breeds.
Why are black dogs so often overlooked? Some of the reasons people give are:
- Harder to read facial features
- Perceived as "ordinary" compared to flashier dogs
- Difficult to photograph, which can impact first impressions
Like others, black Greyhounds can be overlooked in favour of more distinctively marked dogs.
In honour of National Black Dog Day, this year Greyhounds As Pets (GAP) is holding a Black Greyhound Adoption Event. This event highlights the beautiful black Greyhounds still waiting in their kennels.
✔️ Rarely bark (won’t annoy the neighbours, even in an apartment)
✔️ Affectionate and loving
✔️ Minimal shedding
✔️ No doggy smell
✔️ Great with other pets
✔️ Wonderful companions for both little and big kids
✔️ Calm and gentle demeanour
✔️ Improve your social connections. Adopting a Greyhound connects you with a supportive community across Sydney and NSW.
✔️ Keeps you active with daily walks
So, if you love Greyhounds, adopting or fostering one will make a huge difference - this year more than ever! Adopting or fostering a black Greyhound goes one step further to help a dog who's sitting in a kennel, longing for a loving family.
There's no waiting for black dogs. If you're keen to befriend a black Greyhound, why not head to www.gapnsw.com.au/our-greyhounds to check out all the black beauties waiting for a home!
