Lort Smith receives a generous gift to help in the care of animals
Today Lort Smith has received a wonderful gift of advanced imaging technology, a fluoroscopy machine, as part of the generous bequest from the estate of The Late David and Judy Moate.
Lort Smith CEO, Ms Fiona Webster said, “The fluoroscopy is an imaging technique that uses x-rays to obtain real-time moving images of the interior of animals. This technology is not common for animal hospitals or vet clinics with less than a handful of such machines in vet clinics across Victoria.
“Thanks to the generosity of The Late David and Judy Moate, via their executor Mrs Maree Brann, Lort Smith has been able to secure this expensive and advanced piece of imaging technology to use on the animals we treat.”

“As Australia’s busiest not-for-profit animal hospital, our veterinary staff will be using this incredible machine to save the lives and improve the outcomes of the beloved animals who come through our doors every day.
“We treat over 25,000 animals each year, and the demand for our services just keeps growing,” she said.
Lort Smith aims to provide world-class animal care and with the generous gifts from its many supporters, donors and bequestors we are able to improve the health and happiness of animals and the people who care for them.
Ms Webster added, “This remarkable technology will save lives and suffering of animals in our care and continues on the legacy of our founder, Louisa Lort Smith. We are particularly proud to be able to have this capability this year as we celebrate 85 years as an iconic Melbourne institution, serving the people and animals of Victoria.”
Lort Smith is a not-for-profit organisation that receives no ongoing government funding. As well as being an animal hospital, Lort Smith serves the community through an adoption centre and community outreach programs.
“We rely on support from the community to help us deliver vital services to sick, injured and vulnerable animals each year. Our heartfelt thanks go out today to The Late David and Judy Moate who have helped make this work possible,” said Ms Webster.
