Top Tips For Naming Your Pet

When choosing a name for your pet, PIA has some great advice.

“Have a couple on hand that you love and see when your new family member comes home which suits better,” Crighton says.
“Personally, I was devoted to one name, and when my puppy came home, we quickly decided it wasn’t the name for her, so she was known as ‘pup’ for around a week until we came up with the perfect name.”

Some other tips include:

✔️ Recallability – how easily can you call the name across a dog park?

✔️ Length – choose two-syllable names; it makes it easier for your pet to hear.

✔️ Timelessness – choose a name that will stand the test of time.

✔️ Avoid - try and stay clear of names that sound like training commands.

✔️ Vowels - End the name with a vowel.

“These are not set in stone by any means, but if you are perhaps getting a dog for the first time, ending the name in a vowel will allow your dog to understand their name easier as the tone in your voice will naturally change,” Crighton says. “However, many pets end up with nicknames, some that have no relation to the actual name, and they will tend to follow this process inherently.”

PIA also wants to remind readers of important considerations if you're thinking of buying a pet during Christmas.

"It's a great time of year to invite a furry friend into your home as you'll have more time to settle the new arrival before heading back to work and school," Crighton says.

"However, it is vital to remember that a pet is a long-term commitment and needs to be carefully considered to avoid heartache for you and the pet. Pets need training, consistency, and love alongside food, bedding and lifelong veterinary care, budgeting is important before becoming a pet owner."

RSPCA
is urgently seeking Guardian Angels to help provide safety and care for the 17,026 animals spending the festive season in shelters nationally.

“Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year for RSPCA shelters, with thousands of dogs, cats, pocket pets, birds, and livestock in our care waiting for a better future,” said Phoebe Brasher, RSPCA NSW Senior Manager of Fundraising.

To be a Guardian Angel is to give the gift of hope and kindness to the thousands of animals in our care who have finding their forever family on the top of their wish list.”

Sign-up to become a Guardian Angel and your compassion will provide love, care, and support to an animal in need.

✔️ $30.00 could help provide a homeless cat with a warm bed, litter tray, and toys this Christmas.

✔️ $58.00 can help rehabilitate an abandoned or abused dog, helping them trust humans again.

✔️ $77.00 could help pay for the transport of animals between shelters to maximise their hopes of adoption.

✔️ $200.00 can provide vaccinations and microchips for animals living in remote and regional areas without access to veterinary care.

Become a Guardian Angel and provide Potato with shelter and round-the-clock care while she waits to meet her perfect forever family.

All Guardian Angels receive a thank you from one of the many animals they are supporting with their gift, like Potato the Rescuoodle, as well as a link to their profile so you can learn more about them.

Potato is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy who is currently awaiting her forever home at the RSPCA NSW Hunter Shelter. Through becoming a Guardian Angel, you can give her the most incredible gift – hope.

Want to feel happier this Christmas?
Fostering provides care for pets and support for animal shelters

A carefully considered puppy or kitten can be a perfect gift for Christmas, but not every family is ready for a long-term commitment. The sad reality is that cost-of-living pressures and housing shortage are leading to the surrender of thousands of animals to shelters that are already over capacity.

To help ease increasing pressure on animal shelters, national animal welfare charity Companion Animal Network Australia (Australia CAN or CANA) is advocating for the fostering of animals from shelters or rescue groups over the holidays.

CANA comprises six member agencies and promotes responsible pet ownership through national campaigns, partnerships and initiatives.

Shelters all need help over Christmas time as their current foster carers go on holidays and have to return the pets to the shelters while they are away,” said Trish Ennis, CEO of CANA.

“Fostering an animal is a great way to help shelters increase the chance of them being adopted. And it’s emotionally rewarding – doing good makes you feel good.”

Volunteer foster carers take on the temporary responsibility for general care and socialisation of dogs and cats in their own homes until they are ready to be adopted.

“Fostering not only provides invaluable care and support for most-in-need animals, but also supports shelters and rescue groups in giving orphaned animals the best possible chance at finding a loving, permanent home,” said Ms Ennis.

CANA’s members have foster care programs that offer food, bedding, litter trays, bowls and toys as well unlimited advice and support and all veterinary care.

Melissa Penn, President of CANA and Managing Director of the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home in NSW, said the shelter needs foster carers for cats and dogs, particularly large dogs.

“We remove as many obstacles as we can to help people become foster carers. It’s about finding the right animal to go with the right family and home,” she said.

In Victoria, Lort Smith Animal Hospital also needs foster carers for larger breed dogs as well as animals needing care post-surgery.

“Christmas is always a busy time with the shelter hitting peak kitten season. Our animals needing foster carers can more than triple during this period,” said Amanda Doolan, the shelter’s Adoption Centre Manager.

“We have so many wonderful stories about our foster carers, from those adopting whole litters of kittens to animals making miraculous recoveries whether behavioural or medical. The healing effects of being in a home with a foster carer as opposed to a shelter are priceless.”

Another CANA member, Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania, are in dire need of foster carers for dogs, particularly Greyhounds, puppies and those stressed and with medical and behavioural issues.

“Our commitment to the well-being of our dogs extends beyond our shelters, and foster carers play a pivotal role in providing love and respite,” said Mark Wild, CEO of DHoT.

“While we currently have 33 active foster carers, the demand is significant, especially in our northern Homes where only three carers are available. Unfortunately, we lack carers for nursing mums or critical medical/behavioural cases across the state. With just two carers able to take litters state-wide, the need is urgent.

“Many dogs, facing challenges in the shelter, require a haven for recovery. It's not only about the unwell; even long-term residents benefit from a break away from the shelter environment. The support of a foster carer can truly make a life-changing difference for these dogs in need.”

If you are considering fostering, contact your local animal shelter now in time to take your foster pet home for Christmas!

With the silly season quickly approaching,
Pet Insurance Australia has a timely reminder of the dangers this time of year can signal for our pets.

"As the Christmas trees and decorations quickly become the staple in many homes around the country, sadly, some Australian pets will also succumb to the vet emergency trends for this time of year," Nadia Crighton from Pet Insurance Australia says.

From the typical tick and flea infestations to the more interesting claims of dogs ingesting all sorts of goodies, Pet Insurance Australia does witness spikes in claims around the summer period that can leave pet owners in a frantic situation.

"During this time of year, pet owners must stay vigilant with their pet's safety needs," Crighton says. "It's vital you keep up with your preventative treatments, especially for ticks and fleas for those pets who suffer from flea allergies."

Pet Insurance Australia also advises pet owners intending to travel with their pets this holiday season to check if the area is prone to ticks and be prepared.

"Tick paralysis is a terrifying situation for the pet and the owner," she warns. "With the cost of living and the additional expenses of the festive season, prevention is much cheaper than the extensive costs associated with an emergency tick situation, not to mention the emotional toll of potentially losing your pet. A simple $50 tick treatment from your local pet supplies store will make your pet almost tick-proof for three months."

As of November 2023, Pet Insurance Australia claim data already shows a 900% plus increase in paralysis tick claims compared to the year's cooler months. Based on seasonal history, PIA expects elevated tick claim levels right through to February.

"But ask any vet, and you'll find the high-end costs some pet owners pay, out of their own pocket, for life-support ventilators and 24/7 care over a number of days to save their pet from a paralysis tick event, is eye-watering."

Being the time of year when entertaining is high on the agenda for many homes, dogs are also more at risk of foreign body ingestion of objects and toxins.

"We certainly see a big spike in claims for foreign body ingestion during the warmer months," Crighton says. "This can be due to a host of reasons including entertaining and not securing rubbish bins correctly, too many new and interesting items being left around – cue the tinsel."

Skewers, fishhooks, corn cobs, underwear and even puffer fish have been known to cause issues with dogs over the past year. During the festive season, chocolate and alcohol toxicity is also a problem. Overfeeding and feeding dangerous human foods, including nuts, lollies, high-fat foods such as butter, and other toxic foods, can also pose a problem for dogs.

"Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs and can be found in many sugar-free lollies the children might be enjoying over this period," Crighton says. "Being educated on the toxic foods that affect our pets can prevent many issues from occurring."

Dogs are also masters at finding food; some breeds are better at it than others! Young pups and dogs can also be ultra-curious when sniffing out something that can ultimately harm them. Keeping your pet in a safe area during entertaining or when you cannot supervise them is a simple way to keep them safe.

"It's just ensuring that people remember dogs are natural scavengers, and thinking that Rover simply won't eat it is incorrect," Crighton says.
"It's always best to ensure that your pet does not have access to anything that can cause detrimental effects to their health and wellbeing."
Top Tips For Summer

  • Ensure bins are correctly secured and cannot be accessed by your dog.
  • Keep dogs away from entertaining situations when you cannot fully supervise them.
  • Encourage guests to refrain from feeding your pet.
  • Snap skewers into small pieces when putting them into the rubbish.
  • Do not feed your dog corn cobs.
  • Put signs up notifying guests you have a dog and to shut the gate.
  • Never leave chocolate or alcohol in reach of your pet.
  • Secure fishing tackle boxes and keep rods up high with hooks firmly attached.
  • Keep all chemicals, including gardening sprays and bait, secure and out of reach.
  • Train your pet to keep away from the Christmas tree.

"Dogs are curious in nature, especially young pups, and they have an incredible sense of smell," Crighton says.

"Meaning, wrapping boxes of chocolate up and popping it under the tree could be a recipe for disaster. Some simple preparation can prevent many issues from occurring that could see your festive celebrations turning into a sad and tragic event."

Beware the Tick Menace this Summer Season!

With Christmas just around the corner and many Australian families considering inviting the pitter-patter of paws into their homes, Pet Insurance Australia looks at what to consider when choosing a dog breed alongside Specialist Small Animal Surgeon Dr Sarah Goldsmid.

“It is coming up to the time of year when many Australian homes will be considering getting a pet over the summer months,” Nadia Crighton from Pet Insurance Australia says.

“Our data does indicate that this is a busy pet buying time of year, with many signing up for pet insurance around the eight-week mark. Now is the time many pet lovers will be sourcing their new furry friend.”

Pet Insurance Australia has top tips for choosing the right breed for your home and lifestyle.

“It’s imperative to research your chosen breed, as many dogs do have prevalent hereditary conditions that can end up costing pet owners thousands to rectify throughout the lifetime of their pet,” Crighton says. “It’s also imperative to choose a breed that fits your lifestyle and expectations rather than basing it on looks alone.”

Ensuring you can afford these treatments is an integral part of responsible pet ownership. It’s also highly recommended that prospective pet owners do their due diligence on their possible dog breeders and resist quick purchases from backyard breeding establishments.

“Do your homework on your dog breeder and ensure you ask all the important questions regarding hereditary screening and possible breed-related problems or adopt a pet from a shelter,” she recommends. “Backyard breeding and puppy mills only add to the huge amount of unwanted pets around Australia.”

Specialist Small Animal Surgeon Dr Sarah Goldsmid from The Animal Referral Hospital (Homebush) is all too aware of the hugely expensive surgery for hereditary problems with some breeds and the importance of understanding these possible problems before purchase.

“As a specialist small animal surgeon, I see many cases where pets require major and expensive surgery for their hereditary problem,” Dr Goldsmid says.

“For example, Brachycephalic airway disease, if not surgically treated in time, can lead to aspiration pneumonia, the need for a permanent tracheostomy, predispose to severe heat stress, and worst-case scenario can end in premature death.”

A third of surgical cases at Animal Referral Hospital Homebush are related to spinal disease, mainly due to herniated intervertebral discs, which can occur in any breed or mixed breed.

“However, disc disease is over-represented in certain breeds, such as French Bulldogs and Dachshunds. If we see the patients early enough, we can usually get them back to great function again following advanced spinal imaging (CT and MRI) and spinal surgery – but if they have already lost all feeling and movement, their prognosis is poor for recovery of function.”

Mixed Breeds – Best of Both Worlds?

It is common for many in the pet industry to sing the praises of humble mixed breeds. Known for their robustness, choosing a mixed breed dog could help prevent large veterinary bills for many common hereditary conditions. While many breeds are affected by hereditary conditions, increasing the genetic pool within mating can help reduce the risk of some of these conditions from occurring in that litter.

“This is not a precise science – the offspring may still end up with hereditary conditions related to several different breeds, but in general, a mixed breed is less likely to develop the hereditary problem,” Dr Goldsmid says.
“I would always recommend sourcing crossbreeds from the pound or shelters first. This will save a life and discourage backyard breeding.”
Pet owners must understand that certain breeds can suffer from more severe and expensive conditions, such as brachycephalic dog breeds – also known as the ‘squishy faced breeds’.

These breeds will all have varying degrees of breathing difficulties, and many also have spinal deformities and potentially an increased risk of spinal disease later in life.

“Many of these breeds will require airway surgery and or spinal surgery during their lives,” Dr Goldsmid says. “The risk of these diseases may be reduced by breeding to increase the length of the face and opening of the nostrils and also introducing genetics that reflects more normal spinal formation.”

As we come into the peak pet buying season, Pet Insurance Australia is urging pet owners to carefully consider their options of what breed they want and any possible problems those pets could face down the line.

“The peak pet buying season is driven by Christmas, the cat breeding season, and the fact that Australians usually have a few weeks off over the Christmas/New Year break, making it an ideal time to bring a new four-legged fur baby into the home,” Crighton says. “However, most owners will not consider the possible problems their chosen breed may have, leading to high veterinary costs and possible surgeries to rectify the issues.”

Advice When Selecting a Pet – Dr Goldsmid

“You can never completely avoid the heartache of a sick pet, and whatever you do when you obtain a new dog or cat. Do your research, almost all pure-bred dogs have certain conditions that can be a problem. Diseases like hip and elbow dysplasia, gastric dilatation volvulus, spinal issues, skin disease, ear disease, eye conditions, heart disease, etc are all problems that can have a genetic component.”

Dr Goldsmid also suggests when selecting a pet to purchase - as opposed to obtaining one as a rescue from a pound or shelter - it is essential to know that you are getting them from reputable breeders that are ideally registered.

“You should be able to see the parents or at least the mother. A vet check prior to purchase is important, not only for at least one vaccination to be given, but to rule out any congenital issues that would be present at birth (e.g. palate defects, some heart murmurs).”

It is also essential to remember that some conditions only become apparent once the pet is a little older. For example, hip and elbow dysplasia is not usually diagnosed until they are at least six months old. However, unstable hips may be picked up at their second or third vaccination. Ideally, the parents should have been screened for hip dysplasia before mating, but this does not guarantee disease-free offspring.

“In general, it is important for any pet to have regular check-ups and preventative care through a local vet. Vaccinations, worming, heartworm prevention, flea and tick treatments, feeding good quality complete diets, and avoiding obesity are all important factors in reducing the chances of your pet getting sick from preventable problems,” Dr Goldsmid says.

Pet Insurance Australia also recommends anyone thinking of purchasing a pet during the silly season to carefully plan financially for all costs associated with pet care.
“This includes veterinary treatments,” Crighton says.

“According to MoneySmart, a cat or dog will cost between $3,000 to $6,000 in the first year of ownership, with many new pet parents not completely taking the costs of vet care into account until it’s too late. It’s incredibly important that all costs are taken into account before welcoming a new furry family member into the home.”

SlingGuard Car Protector is the ultimate in luxury, quality and durability, as well as first class protection for both your dog and your car!

Designed by SlingGuard for their own dogs, it combats all Australian conditions. The dense faux fur on one side ensures cooling in summer, and snuggly warmth in winter. When reversed, the 100% waterproof heavy duty denier on the other side looks after those wet, sandy beach days - as well as those times when mud puddles are a must to dive into!

The dense middle layer ensures stability and helps reduce anxiety for nervous dogs. Sides zip up to make a cocooned bed in the back seat, or it can be fitted into the back of a SUV or station wagon.

There's seat belt access for dog leads, passengers, or a child’s car seat. Machine washable, hair and dirt also wipe off easily by hand or brush.

This Christmas season, discover a truly unique and sentimental gift for the dog lover in your life. LONITÉ offers an extraordinary way to immortalise the memory of a beloved pet with their exquisite memorial diamonds

Crafted from the carbon found in the ashes or fur of pets, these diamonds undergo a process that replicates the natural formation within the Earth's mantle, resulting in gems that are physically and chemically identical to natural diamonds.
What makes them truly special is the unique backstory they carry.

They are unique keepsakes that immortalise the memory of your loyal companion in a timeless gem — long after they have moved on to the next life. You can pick the diamond’s final colour, cut and carat according to the characteristics that best represent your pet.

LONITÉ produces diamonds of up to 3 carats, in 10 different cuts, and 7 colours including pink, black and purely colourless.
