It is therefore timely to take a closer look at a practice that many are still unaware of – the use of ex-racing Greyhounds for canine blood banks and experimentation. \u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003E\u003Cb style=\"color: #3d85c6; font-family: verdana;\"\u003EWhere does your pet's blood transfusion come from?\u003C\/b\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-size: large;\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-size: large;\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003EOver the last four years, almost \u003C\/span\u003E\u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/greyhoundcoalition.com\/save-queensland-greyhounds-from-research\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" style=\"font-family: georgia;\" target=\"_blank\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"\u003E800 ex-racing Queensland Greyhounds\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003E have been sent to blood banks and used for experiments in Australian laboratories and universities. This practice goes directly against the concept of animal rights. \u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003EIn 2019,\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"\u003E\u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.humaneresearch.org.au\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" style=\"font-family: georgia;\" target=\"_blank\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"\u003EHumane Res\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.humaneresearch.org.au\/\" style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003Ee\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.humaneresearch.org.au\/\" style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003Ea\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.humaneresearch.org.au\/\" style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003Er\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.humaneresearch.org.au\/\" style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003Ec\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.humaneresearch.org.au\/\" style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003Eh Australia\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp;(HRA) discovered around 78 Greyhounds were used for dental, kidney and cardiac experiments in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. Discarded by the racing industry, these Greyhounds were cruelly abused by these experiments.  \u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003EFor example, researchers from \u003Ci\u003E\u003Cb\u003EMonash University\u003C\/b\u003E\u003C\/i\u003E and \u003Ci\u003E\u003Cb\u003EAlfred Hospital\u003C\/b\u003E\u003C\/i\u003E used five Greyhound dogs in a series of experiments with rotary blood pumps implanted in their hearts. The dogs were \u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"\u003E\u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.humaneresearch.org.au\/case-study-4-greyhounds-used-in-a-series-of-acute-experiments-with-rotary-blood-pumps-implanted-in-their-hearts\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" style=\"font-family: georgia;\" target=\"_blank\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"\u003Epre-medicated\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003Ewith \u003Ci\u003Eacetylpromazine\u003C\/i\u003E (used in animals as a means of chemical restraint) and \u003Ci\u003Eatropine\u003C\/i\u003E (a muscle relaxant), and then anaesthetised. No details on the ultimate fate of the Greyhounds is given. \u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003EHRA maintains these practices are unethical, as these former racing greyhounds have already been subjected to stress, injury and anguish from racing. Most Greyhounds have a \u003Cb\u003Enegative blood type\u003C\/b\u003E, which makes them almost \u003Cb\u003Euniversal donors\u003C\/b\u003E for other dogs and sometimes cats. \u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003EUnfortunately, this results in healthy Greyhounds – no longer wanted by the dog racing industry –  being bled to death then euthanised, with their blood supplied to other animals that need treatment. A study published in the \u003Ci\u003EJournal of Applied Animal Welfare Science\u003C\/i\u003E in 2006 concluded that non-profit, volunteer, \u003Cb\u003Ecommunity donor programs can provide a safe and reliable blood supply\u003C\/b\u003E without undue cost burden on the veterinary medical community. \u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003EThe study also said: “The primary justifications provided for captive donor programs do not appear to be valid, and the implementation and maintenance of such programs should be strongly discouraged in almost all instances.” \u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003EMeanwhile, located in South East Queensland, \u003Cb\u003E\u003Ci\u003EPlasvaac\u003C\/i\u003E\u003C\/b\u003E is the only company authorised by the Federal Government to produce animal plasma domestically.
