He called an ambulance and got me to hospital.” \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EIt took several days for Dan to be told he’d suffered two strokes and had a hole in his heart. It’s funny, we say that we rescued her – she actually rescued us,” Dan said. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThe stroke left Dan unable to return to his job as a Disability Support Worker. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E“I had to do a lot of my rehab via telehealth, as it was during the height of the pandemic. She had to be physically removed from his side as she slept on her feet every time he whimpered (she was already 15), because she refused to let him cry alone. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EWhen she left us, it almost broke me, and it did break my boy. His mentor and protector was gone, and coping for him became almost impossible, so in a way, although Rafferty is the inspiration behind \u003Cb\u003E\u003Ci\u003ESniffspace\u003C\/i\u003E\u003C\/b\u003E, Chloe was the reason it all began. Now, I’ve been to India a dozen times and know all too well the plight of dogs over there. Every trip, I am called the crazy one as I play, pat, cuddle and feed as many street dogs as I can find, but not once did I feel the calling to any one of them. I was happy to walk away once they had full bellies and I had a full heart, then I met Indy.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EIndy is a one in a million puppy, living on the streets of \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.technopark.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"\u003ETechnopark\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E (picture a uni campus for businesses), being fed by a few brave souls, and just, well, being a puppy. The first day we met, I’d seen her playing, on her own with something in the grass by a tea stall.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003ESo happy despite her situation...\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003EMy friend Jignesh called to her, and she came bounding over and proceeded to play with a leaf with me. She jumped on my lap, rolled over for belly rubs and then followed me everywhere I went. She played for hours, ate everything I gave her and sat while I tried to wipe her eye clean, inspect her tiny body and work out a plan.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-size: large;\"\u003E\u003Cblockquote\u003EHow do I look after a street dog, in India, from Australia?\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/blockquote\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003ELuckily for me, Jignesh and I are no strangers to overcoming challenges (let’s face it, most people thought we were crazy when we told them we were building a business where people could pay to play with their dogs in someone else’s yard, but here we are).\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ESo we started her journey. We only had days to come up with the start of a plan, so we reached out to our staff to see if there was anyone willing to continue to feed and look out for her.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003ETwenty staff raised their hands. We thought that was it, we’d done it, but what I didn’t know is that although our staff loved dogs, street dogs are a whole new level.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003EThey were happy to throw food on the ground, but to really look after her they needed to touch her, and that was foreign. \u003Cb\u003EThere is an innate fear of street dogs due to rabies in India\u003C\/b\u003E, so even though they could see me cuddling her, playing with her and picking her up, they were wary. This is when we learnt, that Indy wasn’t just any dog. She was the street pup that was going to change the hearts and souls of an entire company. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAs we arrived home, with a plan in place, one staff member who was a little braver started to show the team how beautiful Indy was. She started following them around, coming as soon as they called, and bringing her mum (who was heavily pregnant) closer and closer so they could feed her as well. She wasn’t only bridging the gap between street dogs and people one way, but both ways.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003EWe bought her a collar and an ID tag to keep her safe, they had a bowl for her to feed her, we bought toys that she loved and we were getting regular updates. Her new parents searched for a vet willing to come and treat a street dog, and we finally found a beautiful compassionate man that came and wormed her and started her rabies vaccines. We bought a leash to keep her still, but Indy being Indy, she walked over to him when called and laid at his feet for her injection.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003EThis dog, that had no idea what we were doing, trusted us with her life. We were on top of the world. Indy was safe, people were playing with her and losing their fear, we were now feeding mum and getting excited to help her with her pups, and then it all changed. Our world came crashing down and the helplessness I felt was almost too much to bear…… \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ESee, what was happening over there was this: a young girl tragically died from rabies after being bitten by a street dog and this tragic event started an avalanche. Panic overtook logic, and street dogs became public enemy number one.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003ELet me outline that we don’t blame the people, education around dogs is limited, media is - as always - incorrect and the government is trying. They run a program called \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/vspca.org\/portfolio\/animalbirthcontrol-dogs\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"\u003EABC (Animal Birth Control)\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E to try and stem the births, but there isn’t enough funding. I thought I’d failed her. We should have looked sooner, known it was coming, got her sanctuary, done something…but what? I couldn’t think, it all felt hopeless. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EOur plan was eventually to get her off the streets once she was vaccinated and because of those connections to rescue organisations we got some leads to government facilities. They were starting to round up the street dogs by force, we thought she was safe in our complex, but she wasn’t. They took her…\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EWe called the hospitals in our area, and found a possible location. We weren’t allowed in, but vets were. He wasn’t allowed to tell us anything, but this wonderful man secretly took photos and sent them to us for confirmation. He went there specifically to find her for us, and he did. Hit by a car at nine years old when he ran across a road in a thunderstorm, the injuries were so bad it meant he swapped his eyesight for some neurological damage, a poor deal by any measure. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EHis owners didn’t want a blind dog, and wanted him put down. I don’t know why, so benefit of the doubt and all that (ahem) but the heroic vet refused to do their bidding and instead contacted a rescue group. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI never found out who the vet was, but I will cherish their actions till the day I die. Whoever you are, thank you!\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThe rescuers were \u003Ci\u003EGolden Oldies\u003C\/i\u003E, a non-profit rescue group of volunteers run by the wonderful and dearly departed Gina Fallon. He was one of the small-of-stature Staffies, very friendly, extremely cute with that famous Staffy smile and a constantly wagging short, powerful tail that could inflict a painful blow. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ETruth be told, I visited my friend mostly to see the little man. He was a bundle of wonderful, enthusiastic energy. I’d get down on the carpet to his level and we’d fight….he loved a playful brawl, and as I was about to find out later, not-so-friendly brawls! \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI also noted that whenever I said he was a good boy, his tail wagged. It was my job was to get him one. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAs I lived in a motor home (and still do) I figured it wouldn’t be suitable for either of us. In retrospect, it was an unbelievably idiotic outlook that still baffles me. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003EThat I even entertained the thought is bizarre, but it was early days. Apart from a couple of Old English Sheepdogs as family pets, not to mention numerous cats, I’d never owned a dog before. Like everyone else, I also figured his blindness meant a huge workload and that dogs need a big house and garden, etc. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThere was also another issue; medications. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cb\u003EStormi was on daily steroids to stop his brain swelling\u003C\/b\u003E (a result of the accident), an expensive proposition. He loved sleeping, was happy with just one owner, didn’t mind the confines of the bus (which probably made it easier for him) and so was very easy to look after. I also got a great deal on the medications. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAll he really needed to be happy was food, a warm bed, food, morning walks, food, the afternoon dog park, and food. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAfter a couple of weeks trying to find him a new home, I realised his company in the bus wasn’t an issue, and my criteria for his ownership was iron-clad: if anyone was going to get him, they had to be 100% for the little man, which meant regular walks and dog park visits were compulsory. No ifs and buts. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAnother issue was creeping in…. I didn’t actually want him to go!\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EHe was proving to be a wonderful dog and great companion, and I also knew that I could give him the 100% he deserved, so in the space of two short weeks the little menace slid easily into my life and I was changed forever. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThe blindness wasn’t really an issue. My friend had first walked around the house with little bells on her ankles, and Storm dutifully followed. This included a garbage bin full of kibble when staying at a friend’s place. She walked in to find Stormi and her dog beside the toppled bin, kibble spread over the floor, both too full to move. She estimated they had scoffed at least a kilo each. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EHe did likewise to a 14kg bag of kibble at another friend’s place, once again working in partnership with their dog. Actually, he did it TWICE there. After the first time, the owner put the bag on top of the shelving when he stayed, but one day forgot and that mistake was all Stormi required. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EHis hearing was also excellent and he followed me off-lead everywhere, close behind and listening to my footsteps. Without sight, his hearing was important, and it was a huge blow when he got older and it eventually dulled to almost nothing. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAs for the medication, it was daily, and expensive but I eventually found an online pet pharmacy and the price tumbled drastically. The steroids cost about $50 for 100 tablets from the vet and the same amount from the online store\u0026nbsp;about $8!\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThe online store required a script from the vet (who understood the saving and was happy to supply it), so I bought a year’s supply of steroids for about $350 (about $1200 from the vet). The painkillers (\u003Ci\u003EGabapentin \u003C\/i\u003Eand \u003Ci\u003ETramadol\u003C\/i\u003E) were equally as cheap, and the saving equally huge. All the medication from the online store was dated to last the full year. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAs for his life at 100%, Stormi LOVED the dog park. It’s a large grassy oval surrounded by bush (Aussie slang for forest) on two sides, and no roads. I timed him one day, and he ran constantly for a full one and a half hour. He was always on the move.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ENaturally, a blind dog with a concrete head (he’s a Staffy, remember) running at speed is a serious thing, and he was notorious for slamming full-tilt into people’s shins. It sounds funny, and it was unless it happened to you. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EHis thick, solid-bone little noggin hitting your shins at speed was not a pleasant experience, so loud warnings of impending collision were given. It wasn’t a quality life, and he was clearly depressed so I tried one last thing: a front-wheeled doggie wheelchair. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI did the research and decided on \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/eddieswheels.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"\u003EEddie’s Wheels\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, a USA-based company. More expensive than others but the quality of materials and design was clearly superior, in my opinion. I do have to say that one of the other dogs at the park had another brand rear-wheel cart for their dog, and it worked fine. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EMost dog wheelchairs\/carts are rear-wheeled (wheels at the rear) as most dogs lose the use of their back legs, but Stormi had lost the use of his front legs, so needed a front-wheel design that lifted his front legs mostly off the ground – he had some weight on them, enough so he could feel the ground and use them as before, but much less than without.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cb\u003E\u003Ci\u003EEddie’s Wheels\u003C\/i\u003E\u003C\/b\u003E were great to deal with, and it duly arrived. When the owners started asking for copies, and complimenting my work, I created a website, ‘\u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/stormiphotography.com.au\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"\u003EStormi Photography\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E’, to showcase my work.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003EIt's named in honour of my little mate and it’s his snout on the title page. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAs for Stormi, he had his own Facebook page, ‘\u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/strongdogbigspirit\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"\u003EStormi the Blind Staffy\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E’. A few people had suggested it, and I was blown away that within a year he had about eight hundred followers from all over the globe enjoying his many adventures. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EIt’s still active, and I do the odd update. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EStormi and I were together a wonderful five years, only one night apart in all that time. He travelled in the bus beside me on all my touring adventures, and I still feel the pain of his loss when I pass the places in the country we used to stop at, usually so he could have a wee, stretch his legs, and have a sniff. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EYou wouldn’t bat an eye driving past. It may be a small side road, or just somewhere to pull over, but those little spots mean so much to me. I still stop at them for old time’s sake, and feel it hard when I don’t, so call his name as I pass… and sometimes shed the odd tear. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cblockquote\u003EHe really did change my life. His loyalty and friendship, the laughs, the companionship, the responsibility… it all adds up.\u003C\/blockquote\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-size: large;\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003ESo many positives came from him... the social nature of the dog park, rediscovering the joys of photography, talking to strangers just because they have a dog, strangers talking to me just because I have a dog, \u003C\/span\u003E\u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=100076209305021\" rel=\"nofollow\" style=\"font-family: georgia;\" target=\"_blank\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"\u003EStormi Photography\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003E, a new rescue Staffy (Chelsea)… all this because of a blind dog.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: large;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI was 58 years old when we first met, and I’m very lucky to say I’ve had a very fortunate and wonderful life, and yet for all this it was a stubborn, arthritic, feisty, blind and medicated nine-year old dog that would have the biggest impact. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EStormi passed away naturally and suddenly just before midnight on February 2, 2021. He was by my side, and in the home he loved. As his life slipped away, I held him close and told him how much I loved him, and that he was a good boy. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThis was the one time his tail didn’t wag, but that’s okay, he was starting his new journey. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI will be following him on that same journey not too long from now, and look forward to seeing him again.
