Then, there is what the racing industry calls ‘wastage’ because it overbreeds in search of that elusive winner. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EIn fact, around \u003Cb\u003E25 percent of the 11,000 Greyhounds bred\u003C\/b\u003E in Australia each year are ‘\u003Cb\u003Esurplus to requirements\u003C\/b\u003E’, meaning they will never make it to the racing track. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThe \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/greyhoundcoalition.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"\u003ECoalition for the Protection of Greyhounds\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E (CPG), a digital volunteer group, wants to raise awareness in the community about this unacceptable situation. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ECPG president \u003Cb\u003EDennis Anderson\u003C\/b\u003E says thousands of unwanted Greyhounds are put to death despite being healthy, rehomeable and possibly suitable as therapy dogs. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E“We’re calling on the racing industry and state governments to fund the many community-run rescue organisations which are ‘no kill’, as well as fund privately operated sanctuaries for these dogs by using betting tax,” he said. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EMr Anderson said another vital solution which state governments must \u003Cb\u003Eput in place is ‘whole of life tracking’\u003C\/b\u003E.
