Australian-First Dog Food Innovation: Larry’s Lunch to Debut Lightly Cooked Freeze-Dried Meals

In a landmark moment for the Australian pet food industry, Larry’s Lunch is set to launch the nation’s first-ever lightly cooked freeze-dried dog food this Monday, 12 August — combining wholefood nutrition with shelf-stable convenience in a world-first format.

A New Era for Dog Food

Larry’s Lunch, a fast-growing, family-run pet food business based in Melbourne, is shaking up the market with the launch of its lightly cooked freeze-dried meals for dogs. This innovation provides the best of both worlds: the safety and digestibility of gently cooked human-grade food, and the convenience of freeze-dried, shelf-stable storage. It’s an Australian first — and a category-defining moment.

Why This Launch Matters— and Why It’s Time Sensitive

With growing consumer awareness of the poor regulation and quality control in commercial pet food, demand for premium, transparent, and nutritionally sound alternatives is surging. Larry’s Lunch aims to meet this demand — but with a solution that’s also practical for everyday life.

“The Australian pet food industry is completely unregulated. Even products stocked in vet clinics have been linked to contamination and illness,” says co-founder Aaron Bach.
“Pet parents want safer, cleaner, real food — and that’s what we’re delivering.”
The meals are formulated by a certified animal nutritionist, guaranteeing they are complete and balanced for daily feeding without any fillers or preservatives.

From Tragedy to Innovation

The business was born after Aaron and his wife Laura’s puppy, Larry, was viciously mauled by another dog in 2020.

With 14 skull fractures, multiple surgeries, and permanent jaw damage, Larry couldn’t eat standard pet food.

So they started cooking for him — and in doing so, stumbled across major problems in the industry that they were determined to change.

What Sets Larry’s Freeze-Dried Meals Apart

✔️ Lightly cooked before freeze-drying (not raw): This process is designed to improve digestion and preserve the natural flavour, making the food suitable for dogs with sensitive stomachs and appealing to fussy eaters.

✔️ Preserves 98% of nutrients.

✔️ Shelf-stable: The meals require no fridge or freezer, making them ideal for travel.

✔️ Simple to serve: Scoop and serve, or add warm water to rehydrate. The meals are ready in just 30-60 seconds.

✔️ Made with human-grade Australian meat and vegetables: The recipes feature real, whole ingredients like grass-fed lamb, wild-caught fish, and free-range turkey, combined with gently cooked vegetables and superfoods.

✔️ Available in five proteins: chicken, lamb, beef, turkey and fish.

Built by a Family, Backed by Big Names

Larry’s Lunch
is proudly independent, run by husband-and-wife team Laura Binnie and Aaron Bach, alongside their three-year-old daughter Elle (who helps pack orders) and their two dogs, Larry and Liam — the official taste testers. With another baby on the way, the couple say it’s truly a family affair.

The brand has been endorsed by celebrated Melbourne chef Raymond Capaldi, and footy great Dane Swan, who now stocks Larry’s Lunch at his Windsor pub, The Union Hotel.
