15 Dog-Friendly Winter Getaways

Is it time to start thinking about planning your next winter escape? When you're travelling with pets, you need to plan well in advance to secure dog-friendly accommodation that ticks all the boxes in your favourite holiday spot!

We teamed up with the expert team at Holidaying with Dogs to highlight some of their favourite destinations for this winter season. Happy travels with your furry family!

NEW SOUTH WALES

#1. The Beach House – Waterfront - Culburra Beach, South Coast NSW

Only 2.5 hours South of Sydney, the Beach House enjoys an absolute waterfront position, perched on the sand dunes with private access to the off-leash dog-friendly Culburra Beach


Boasting ocean panoramas where whales and dolphins frequently frolic, The Beach House features a secure backyard of sprawling lawns for pooches (plus secure dog run with outdoor kennel), exuberant kids and beachside BBQs. 

Tranquil for couples and an idyllic retreat for families with dogs, this house is also perfect for surfers keen to sample the local waves. 

This is a large property (4 bedrooms) that sleeps up to 11 people and accepts up to 4 pets (allowed inside).

#2. Clarendon Forest Retreat - The Chapel - Possum Brush, Northern NSW

This romantic sandstone chapel disguises a luxury split-level cottage within. A unique ambiance is created by cathedral ceilings and gothic windows. 

The loft bedroom is home to a beautifully carved four-poster cedar queen-sized bed. The log fire, cosy sofa and antique dining suite all add to the ambiance and a few steps downstairs, the heated spa pool awaits with views over the valley.

The property is not fenced and dogs are not allowed on the furniture, beds or carpeted areas or alone in the house as the house is full of treasured antiques and tapestries. Best suited to a short getaway with one small dog (extra $20/night).

#3. Flying Dog Cottage - Mullumbimby, North Coast NSW

Only a 15 minute drive to the buzz of Byron Bay, 10 minutes to laid back Brunswick Heads with its glorious beaches and 15 minutes by car to Bangalow. This area has some of the most scenic drives in Northern NSW through quaint villages and sub-tropical rainforest. 


Flying Dog Cottage is a gorgeous holiday cottage (sleeping up to 6) located in a quiet street in the heart of Mullumbimby, close to Byron Bay. 

This is a great base to experience the magic of the Far North Coast Rainbow Region. Funky shops, an impressive array of great cafes & restaurants, organic food shops, wonderful markets, retro shops and art galleries will make your stay truly memorable.

The cottage has a large fully fenced garden and up to two dogs are allowed inside. There’s also a dog exercise park just around the corner for longer walks and a swim in the Brunswick River.

QUEENSLAND

#4. Surf Club House - Mudjimba, Sunshine Coast QLD

The Surf Club House is one of the first original beach houses of the area. Now tastefully renovated and stylishly furnished for a modern holiday with wireless internet. A very short walk to restaurants, shops, Surf Club, playground and beach.

The dual-occupancy property (sleeps up to 8) is all on ground level and includes a main house (2-bedroom) plus a self-contained back studio style apartment. The property is fully fenced and accepts up to 2 dogs (allowed inside).

You’re only one minute away from a surf beach and a nature bike path (2 adult mountain bikes are provided) is close by. 


Enjoy your own covered BBQ dining area overlooking the tropical gardens and solar heated plunge pool. For the rainy days, the large double garage is equipped with table tennis, board games etc.

#5. Majestic Manly Waterfront, 
Manly, Brisbane QLD

This quiet location offers great views over Moreton Bay, yet is only a 5 minute walk from the train station and Manly Harbour Village with a variety of restaurants and cafes.


This beautifully furnished waterfront home is living at its finest. From the moment you enter through the front doors onto the polished timber flooring this house flows with style through the bi-fold doors to alfresco area overlooking the beautiful landscaped pool. The living area flows through the bi-fold doors onto the alfresco outdoor living area which overlooks the beautiful pool area and Bali hut. Front balcony overlooking waterfront views out to Moreton Bay.

#6. Quarterdecks Retreat – Hervey Bay, Qld

This is the closest accommodation to the barge landing to travel to Fraser Island.

A select number of villas are pet friendly (up to 2 dogs allowed inside) for an extra $50/stay for 1-2 nights and $100/stay for 3 nights or more. Dogs are required to be on their lead and accompanied at all times as you’re close to koalas and kangaroos’ habitat.

This luxurious one-bedroom Delux Villa offers guests the perfect relaxing escape after a full day of sightseeing and exploring the Fraser Coast or Fraser Island.

This villa is equipped with a queen bed and lounge with digital television and DVD player. You also get a private lock up garage and your own courtyard. The villa is complete with reverse cycle air conditioning and free Wi-Fi throughout.

TASMANIA

#7. Arthur River Spa Cottage - North West Coast, TAS
This amazing waterfront beach house has recently been refurbished to offer you modern comfort amongst the wild Arthur River landscape.

With three bedrooms plus a double sofa bed in the lounge if required, the property can sleep 10 people in 7 beds plus 2 dogs are allowed inside. The open plan kitchen / dining / lounge has wonderful large windows that make the most of the sea view, and features a toasty open fireplace, comfy leather lounge and satellite TV.

Just outside is a glass sheltered North ( river facing ) outdoor entertainment deck with its own open potbelly fireplace, sound system and BBQ.

#8. Peck’s on Pine - West Hobart TAS


Peck's on Pine is ideally situated for convenience to local shops, and within walking distance of Hobart city.
This self-contained Victorian Cottage is reminiscent of the early days of the settlement. Built in 1890, this lovingly restored classic example of early Victorian architecture oozing charm and warm hospitality. 

Featuring stained glass windows and furnished with antique pieces and collectables, this cosy accommodation offers a living and dining room, double bedroom, separate bathroom and a fully fenced courtyard.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

#9. Rainbow Farm, Fleurieu Peninsula, SA

Rainbow Farm is on the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula, only a 15 minute drive from the dog-friendly beach at Normanville. From this base, you can explore Victor Harbor with Granite Island and the Heysen Trail, enjoy whale watching and The Cockle Steam Train, wineries and local cafes, op shops. 

Set on 15 acres of farmland, this 3 bedroom property offers all the comforts of home: relax by the fire or out on the front deck. You will feel secure knowing your dogs can run free in the fully fenced land and they are also allowed inside (any size welcome). You can enjoy fresh laid eggs for breakfast and the kids will love feeding the animals and exploring in the fresh country air.

VICTORIA

#10. Woodend Cottage - Woodend, Macedon Ranges, VIC

Woodend Cottage is only 1 hour drive from Melbourne CBD along the Calder freeway and 10mn from Hanging Rock. 
Located in a rural setting just out from Woodend township, this rustic yet modern luxury cottage is incredibly private and secluded within an acre of gardens, trees and hedging.

The style is French Provincial Farmhouse with high cathedral ceilings and an open plan living, dining and kitchen.

It’s a perfect vantage point to visit the many attractions including Hanging Rock (5min), Mount Macedon (10min), Trentham (20min) and Daylesford (30mins).

#11. The Base One - Bright, VIC

This is the ultimate luxury pad to explore the Alpine Valley, with spacious inside/outside living, tall windows to take in the mountain views and all the creature comforts. 


This front villa lets in loads of sun with a small grassed, fully fenced yard area. The open plan living area features a wood fire and TV/DVD/Ipod as well as reverse cycle heating/cooling.

#12. Mountain Duck Cottage – Grampians, VIC

Experience the privacy and quiet of life on a historic 4500 acre sheep farm ‘South Mokanger’ at the edge of the Grampians National Park, just 3 hours from Melbourne. 

You’re also a bit over an hour to the coast, Port Fairy, Portland, Warrnambool and for wine lovers, the Henty Wine Region and Coonawarra.

Mountain Duck Cottage (circa 1865) offers self-contained comfort with cosy log fires and is fully fenced for your dogs! A north facing verandah is a favourite spot for breakfast, enjoying visits from the enchanting blue wrens.

Majestic 600-year-old red gums and spectacular scenery invite you for country walks or mountain exploring with wineries, and restaurants nearby or the very popular local village pub just down the road at Cavendish.

Great for romantics or the extended family and your pets (up to 3) are very welcome inside.

#13. Country House Retreat - Nungurner, Lakes Entrance region, VIC

Country House Retreat offers guests all the charm of a farm stay but with a touch of luxury. Situated just 15 mins from Lakes Entrance and 10 mins from Metung, it's the ideal location for a peaceful and relaxing holiday in the country. This homestead is surrounded by beautiful countryside in the small hamlet of Nungurner, with the Gippsland Lakes just a 4 minute drive away. 


The house sleeps up to 10 comfortably so is perfect for large families or groups of friends travelling together. 

Outdoors you'll find a large entertainment deck complete with wood fire pizza oven, outdoor heated spa, views of surrounding farm land and hammocks strewn around to relax in with a good book. In the cooler months enjoy a cosy log fire (wood supplied) or simply switch on the split system for instant warmth and comfort.

Pets are permitted indoors on non-carpeted areas and there’s also an enclosed dog run adjacent to the home. The house yard is securely fenced allowing both children and pets to roam freely and safely around the large lawn area.

#14. Grangeview Guesthouse B & B - Busselton WA

#15. Harbourside Cottage - Albany, WA

Relax on the front verandah of this cosy and charming three bedroom cottage, circa 1890. 

Consisting of three bedrooms and one bathroom plus a lovely country style kitchen. The cottage also has its own fully enclosed courtyard for your privacy and to keep your dogs secure.

There are a number of properties available and all accommodation options have fully appointed kitchens and laundries, free wireless internet and reverse cycle air conditioning for all year round comfort. Private courtyards, barbeques, off road parking all make for a relaxing and enjoyable stay in Albany. All dogs (2 maximum) are allowed inside, just not on the furniture and not to be left unattended.
