Labrador Championship Show 2018 - May 12-13

Over 300 Labradors will be competing in the 10th National Championships on Saturday 12 - Sunday 13 May in Sydney.

The Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog breed in Australia, known for their lovable and fun-loving personality and possibly the cutest puppy face on a canine!

339 Labradors will arrive to Orchard Hills from interstate to compete in the 10th Labrador Retriever National Championship Show, hosted by the Labrador Retriever Club of NSW Inc.

The first Australian Labrador Retriever National Championship Show took place in 2000 in Sydney; it is now held every two years and hosted on a rotational basis by a different Labrador Retriever state club associated with the National Labrador Retriever Breed Council, which is affiliated with the Australian National Kennel Council Ltd (ANKC).

“This will be the third National event held in Sydney and we hope to deliver a fantastic weekend full of great sportsmanship, showcasing the wonderful Labrador Retrievers we have in Australia,” said Hugh Gent OAM, President of the Labrador Retriever Club of NSW Inc.

“Labradors are friendly, energetic and have a good temperament, as well as very useful working dogs from search and rescue to assisting people with disabilities.”

As a member body of the ANKC, Dogs NSW is the peak body in New South Wales responsible for promoting breeding, showing, trialling, obedience, and other canine-related activities and the ownership of temperamentally and physically sound purebred dogs across NSW.

“The National Championship shows are the premiere event for all Labrador Retriever exhibitors. To win at a National Championship Show is something many breeders/exhibitors aspire to!” said Mr Gent. “We also have international breeders who come to our special event to watch, meet and learn from our Australian breeders.”

Dogs NSW encourages the public to attend the special event to learn about the many benefits of owning a family-friendly, purebred Labrador Retriever.
“After all, Orchard Hills will be the one place in Sydney with the greatest number of Labradors under one roof since the 2010 Nationals!” said Mr Gent.

Besides the judging of the Best in Show on Sunday May 13, other highlights of the two-day event include:

  • the Obedience competition
  • the Retrieving Ability Test For Gundogs (RATG)
  • the Rick Ward Memorial Trophy awarded annually in NSW to the Best Puppy in Show (3-6 months old).

The Veterans Parade is also a special part of the event involving Labrador Retrievers over 8 years of age that have typically retired from showing and have had a successful show career,” said Mr Gent. “The parade gives people a chance to see the champions of the past, the well-known dogs that new exhibitors only know by name. The dogs themselves love being in the parade and getting all the attention!”

Dogs NSW and the Labrador Retriever Club of NSW Inc thank the following sponsors for their support: Advance™, Love’em, CCrates, Delete™, The Wolf’s Den, Fyshwick Cement, Chris Christensen, Dog News Australia, Easy Dog Entries, Eye Candy Show Accessories and Orivet Genetic Pet Care.
